How Does MMR Work?

I've never played ranked. Been playing about 1.5 years. In normals I get gold players on avg. Last night my game was 3 golds + 1plat + 1 diamond.

Does this only take into account 5v5 normals? Or 3v3 also? Or does 3v3 have its own system?
How is MMR calculated?
Does this mean I would likely place in gold if I decided to go ranked?

I remember getting started with ranked games in season 3 for the first time and not knowing how any of it worked. Sometimes it is best to just jump into the deep end of the pool.

Every player has a separate MMR for each game mode.
Unfortunately, how MMR is calculated is only known by Riot, but we know it takes in account the amount games you win.
What Tier you get placed in would depend on how well you do in your 10 placement matches.
