Why is the wording of the leaverbuster warning like this?

Pythagorean Thm·12/9/2014, 10:52:18 PM·70 votes·13,744 views

"Abandoning a match or being afk results in an unfair game for your teammates, and is a punishable offense in League of Legends. Do you agree not to leave any further games?"

And then you have to TYPE "I agree" into the box. A button that says "I agree" on it apparently wasn't good enough. From the posts Lyte has made on this, he makes it out to be just a warning letting players know that it's not okay to just leave games. And y'know? I'd be fine with that. However, the way it's worded, and the way it goes about it (forcing you to type I agree), just makes it feel like a binding contract that you can't possibly promise to uphold instead of a warning.

This should be clarified if Lyte and co want to make this out to be a warning. Instead of what it is right now, It could be something like:

"Abandoning a match or being afk results in an unfair game for your teammates. We understand that emergencies or technical failures sometimes force you to leave; however, leaving for any other reason is not acceptable, and is a punishable offense in League of Legends. Do you agree to do your best not to leave any further games?"

Edit: I know at least 2-3 rioters have read this by now. Could you like yell down the hall at Lyte or something?

The worst is that the only people who really care about this are people that got the message after an emergency or technical failure forced them from the game

The everyday rager gives 0 fucks about typing "i agree" into the computer; its why negative reinforcement that Riot has used for years on leavers hasn't worked

I had a game which i had connection problems, but managed to get back in after the first 10 minutes or so, and stayed in the whole game after that. I got the warning, which is really dumb because i never actually left the game and i knew how unfun that game was because i was 7 levels behind when i started it.

Rikari12/9/2014, 11:37:11 PM10 votes

I wish we could type anything else besides "I Agree"

Visys12/10/2014, 12:18:42 AM8 votes

Last night the game for some reason wouldn't let me connect to the bots game I was trying to play until 7 minutes in.

At the end I got this warning..

Man, idk why exactly but getting this message in that situation and having to agree with it seriously peeved me off.

Because extortion needs to present itself with at least some subtlety.

I just DC'd because my modem went screwy for 6 minutes and got a Leave, the first one in over a month I'm pretty sure (I've never actually left a game once, not one time, just occasional DC's because I don't have omnipotent control over my internet provider...) and this freaking message shows up, forcing me to beg forgiveness and plead sorry to almighty Riot. This is fucking disgusting.

If I had a record of leaves, then this crap would be fine, but it's bullshit to try to "Break" the playerbase as if were all unruly heathens that need to be reprogrammed. This is the honest feeling I get from this crap, I don't care how easy it is to type two words, when you try to force people to do it when they might have just freaking DC'd is out of order and insulting.

I don't understand how people have so many issues leaving the game. All these "emergencies." I think in the 3 years I've been playing, I've had maybe 1 minor emergency (stupid housemate let dog run into road), that caused me to temporarily leave my match, and a handful of 'connection issues.'

If you can't clear your schedule for an hour for your match, don't start a match. Don't give me 'but my mom said i have to eat' kind of BS. You know when dinner time is. Don't tell me "my mom said we have to go now" bs. You knew your mom wanted you to go out with her.

If you're going to try "Well, I am an ADULT and I have a BABYYYYYYY," bs, if your child is going to be crawling around and drinking fucking toilet cleaner or something, don't start a match.

Lol, now they're going around deleting topics about this before they have a chance to get upvotes. Rito OP.

NoPantsCommando12/10/2014, 11:22:17 AM3 votes

Wrong. I disagree. The way it is right now is perfect. It makes you stop, read, and actually think about what you are agreeing to. You and I are guilty of checking the same old "term of service"-esque box without a second thought and clicking "next." If the warning was presented in this similarly feeble manner, leavers would not take it seriously.

The fact that the current warning stirs up such emotion in you that it causes you to write in the boards about it, is evidence that the warning is doing its job. Both they and I have no tolerance for people who leave games, for whatever reason.

Well done Riot, well done.

I got one of these due to my ghetto internet service cutting out during a ranked game. Not only did I have to 'agree', but it also demoted me down from Silver 5 to Bronze 1.

Lovely.

The way Riot is handling this, is the same as they did with the wide-spread fourteen-day monthly bans they were dishing out w/o explanation, or sufficient warning.

Don't expect to see any answers, to Riot; you are the very same people they don't want lingering around in the community, they could care less about your personal lives; or any issues with service providers, although... I wish you all good luck in your endeavors.

lol...

I was out of game for 4 minutes yesterday (in an ARAM nonetheless) and I got that popup. That's ridiculous. I tried to type "sod off" personally, but it wouldn't let me. Seriously? 4 minutes in 1 game? And what of people who can't get in due to their internet or (more likely recently) shitty rito servers? Get your shit in gear rito.

Mara of Meta12/10/2014, 10:14:28 AM2 votes

there should at least be a way to explain your leaving the game. I get kicked once a day for bugsplats and then it won't let me log back in until i restart my computer( attempting to reconnect hasn't existed since about august it just freezes and splats) and now i'm gonna get this stupid message when it happens, like i just did.... thanx riot

Konidias12/10/2014, 9:27:53 PM2 votes

I had to afk in a bot game to help my girlfriend get stuff from her car one night and I got this warning... Like really... in a beginner bot game? Who even cares? I'd actually love if my team AFK'd in a beginner bot game. More free ez kills for me.

I know I've seen Riot make a stance on this before but seriously... who in the heck cares about AFKers in beginner bot games?

Caoil12/10/2014, 10:56:53 PM2 votes

I have intentionally left 3 games in over a year of playing. The first was because I was playing with a 4-man premade who were just trolling me (verbally abusing me in chat, and when I muted them they all came to my lane and started running into the turret). I felt I was justified leaving that one time. The second time I was visiting my family for a weekend and my idiot brother called me at 1am from a party because he got drunk and broke his wrist jumping off a trampoline, so I had to leave my game to take him to the hospital. I also feel justified in that. The third time was because there was a grass fire near my home and we were being evacuated.

I have maybe been disconnected from 5 or 6 games in over a year, a couple due to internet issues, but mostly server issues.

Point of this is, life happens, and I'll probably receive a leaver buster warning one day, but considering how infrequently I leave games I'm not worried about receiving anymore than a warning. If you receive a warning once for leaving a game, the system won't penalize you if you leave another game 3 months down the road (unless those were your only 2 games in those 3 months). It's based on the percent of games you leave when you play.

Brainbucket12/16/2014, 6:23:30 PM2 votes

I have an on-call job. Left one game because I got a call, and I got leaver busted. WTF.

I do not agree to promise something I can't promise. Why do you force us to lie with the warning message? LoL is not the most important thing in my life, and that's why I play normals instead of ranked. This is absurd.

"Sorry riot I just clicked the button and didn't read it. Please revoke my ban"

That's why you have to type it. Banning accounts is no joke, they want you to understand the situation, not just blindly click the first button you see and then leave the next game.

I am Serenity12/10/2014, 5:40:47 PM2 votes

Yea this kind of pissed me off today. First league tells me my connection is blocked because of a firewall, which I disabled my windows firewall and antivirus, still getting the error. Then I restart my computer, still no luck. Then restart my modem, still no luck. Then reset my ipconfig, and finally I get into the game 15 minutes late. But of course I have to sign some stupid contract because of stuff out of my control.

Whimsic Wicked12/10/2014, 2:36:29 AM1 votes

I had to agree to not leave games after my computer died. The game had already ended by the time I was able to finally get it on and reconnected.

GI Blow12/13/2015, 9:36:49 PM1 votes

I agree.

But seriously, the issue with the wording is that it is acknowledgement of guilt. If you were having a connection issue, you're guilty. If you had to step away for a couple seconds, you're guilty. If you had an emergency, you're guilty. Leave determination of guilt up to the tribunal. If you reconnect and explain the issue to your teammates and they still choose to report you, then you have to deal with it. At least under those conditions there is a chat log that someone can refer to and determine what happened.

If I wanted to deal with blame and guilt, I'd leave my mom's basement.

Going to stop buying RP and start buying smite gems if they keep engaging in this type of activity. This is garbage.

porcupain10/29/2015, 11:15:01 PM1 votes

in YEARS and thousands of games of League i'm fairly certain i've left a match less than 10 times --- the vast majority being due to internet problems.

maybe once before today was a RL issue. i had to handle a personal matter i won't be getting into here but suffice to say it was immensely more important than LoL.

if i were a habitual afk-er or something, i could understand this syntax. being that it's my first time in many months, to be confronted with this asinine wording makes me annoyed to say the least. you seriously need to reconsider your wording or under what circumstances you implement this warning.
i don't mind letting you know that i typed a great many things before "i agree". and now, here is the appended ending to "i agree" -

i agree... you're in dire need of an [adult] editor / community manager to filter your exceptionally poorly worded / implemented "warnings".
