So I was gold 5 at the end of the season. I realistically only wanted Gold so that I could get the victorious skin, so over the past few months I played a match a month to prevent decay. I heard horror stories about almost every person under the sun being placed into lower divisions even though they went positive in their placements. I only played two pre-season matches and won both. Why didn't I get placed lower like the majority of people?
just fyi you dont get decay in gold
no clue quite honestly. I dropped from b2 to b3 from placements. Gaining 33 lp per win though so it's not an issue.

won 7 out of 10 and still got placed lower than end of s4

Because you waited longer. You always want to wait (I'd argue at least a month) before joining a ranked season.
If everyone is at ~1400 mmr day 1, then each match, regardless of the skill of the players in that match, is weighted the same. On the other hand, if you wait, you might win your first match against players around 1400 mmr, but then win your second match against players with gold mmr (because you won the last) which will be weighted more greatly.
That's my read anyhow.
