I hit gold about 2 months ago and I was climbing fine for a while, but unfortunately I hit a large loss streak and went back to gold 5. I have lost all of my lp now and Ive been put under demotion protection, which I thought ran out after about 10 games, but im well over 100 into gold now.
What demotion protection from a promotion means is that for the next 10 games after a tier promotion (or 3 for division) you can't be demoted by losing a match at 0 LP. Once you play those games, whether you win or lose, you don't have that protection.
You also can get additional protection through having sufficient MMR. To drop out of a tier your MMR actually has to be really low (some say it's a full tier), and you can also get extra protection from division demotion if your MMR is high enough.
