It's almost the end of 2014. Let's discuss what Riot has done wrong and what they've done right.

Please comment one thing you think Riot did right, and comment one thing you think Riot did wrong. Don't worry about repeating what others have said.

What I think Riot did right:

The new map. Man, it looks great. It's a vast improvement over the old map. I have to give a hearty "Well done!" to the team in charge of that.

What I think Riot did wrong:

The way they handled the lore retcon. They essentially said "Alright, all this stuff is no longer canon. League is now kind of like super smash brothers." They also only have 2-3 sentences of lore for updated/new champions in the client itself. They do have the full lore elsewhere, however. They've said their goal is to have a link to the full lore in the client along with the short lore. That's fine, but why not just paste the full lore into the client until that gets done?

The 2nd half of 2014, Riot has done A LOT of right. Several new champions, reworked champs, interesting skin, game mechanics, new visuals, client visuals, game changes, increased complexity.. the list goes on..

I'd agree that lore, is a weakness. Its hard to tell stories for mutliplayer games in a way that captures everyone's interest... if rito wants to get lore done right, then i think it has to be done through single player gameplay.. perhaps parallel rts game or something...

I don't care if it was in 2013, but i sure can tell you what they did wrong. Karma Karma Karma

Right: SR update, champion visual updates.

Wrong: Lore retcon, handling of reworks.

Not necessarily saying that all of the reworks have been bad (because they haven't), but I feel like the designers should be required to have a discussion with players at the beginning of the rework process. See what we think feels good and bad for the champion in question, and whether certain things about the champion should be brought into the limelight or greatly reduced.

Did right: they could identify problems in the game

Did wrong: they took too long to address them. for example, smite killing ulting tryndamere - should have been hotfixed, the fix should not have been delayed until next patch.

right: -awesome map design -crab -bunch of cool fun new champions to play with interesting mechanics that have never been seen before

wrong: -Cassiopeia -Jungle changes, crazy snowbally now and Baron is essentially an insta-win for a team that is ahead since those 70% damage reduction minions DO NOT BLOODY DIE, and baron changed from being a team fight oriented buff to a shove buff, I would have liked to see them just leave Dragon buffs for shoving and leave baron as the "ok we need to be able to do better in teamfights" buff -the silence removal, I would have just nerfed duration first on LB & Talon silences to like 0.5-0.75 seconds for Leblanc, and a 0.75-1 second silence for Talon before straight up taking it away to see if that improved counter play vs them. (LeBlanc especially since she can only proc 1 silence without using her W (the more accurate skill shot in my opinion, which also puts her at greater risk) or landing her E which is such a wonky skill shot (it's like it has a minion magnet on the end of it), and Talon used that silence to help him deal with mages who can out burst him early & trade in lane, now he has to just farm till he can 100-0 or he'll get seriously out traded if he goes on someone with cut-ankle

Right: New Map, Champion Designs, Quick new champ releases

Wrong: CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Us: "We all have 100+ ping!!" Rito: "You are not LCS, you are not China. We don't give a fuck.

Us: "There is a bug on Twisted Treeline, my favorite map! Rito: "Whats Twisted Treeline?"

I exaggerate...they don't actually respond at all.

I'm enjoying the new map. its more detailed and to me it just seems more like an actual jungle now! especially with the neutral monsters and their "opening" i find detail in that most entertaining! and thats not including what they did with Baron and Dragon. really dig the new buffs on dragon and just makes playing Bot lane much more fun. always to make sure you ward Dragons pit just to make sure the opposing team isnt doing the same. and baron just seems much more deadly!

One thing i dont like though granted just for me personally is the Jungle items. wasnt really a fan of the Jungle role and i think it just made it more difficult. but thats probably because its still new and im just not use to it. given time ill probably see what i need to do and improve as a jungle player! with that though i feel like they should have done a little more testing with said items. it doesnt make any sense to test out these items and put them on live just to have some champion work all too well with these items. i feel they either need to nerf the champions or the items!

Good:

Yeah the new map looks good.

Cons:

Not a fan of the new jungle. LeaverBuster is possible the worst thing to happen to LoL.

The utter obliteration of any logical method of affecting player behavior. Anyone even remember that we used to have a tribunal anymore?

warpenguin55512/10/2014, 6:17:17 PM2 votes

What they did right: they made some very fun and unique champions

What they did wrong: made jungle about the same popularity of support

Everything with ranked.

Did Wrong

  1. Still haven't addressed East Coast ping being 5x greater than West Coast ping. I get 95-105 steady ping in Virginia while my friends range from 20 all the way up to 130 (Nova Scotia).

  2. Can't say I'm a fan of their refund policy, especially in regards to skins that have been received via Mystery Gift. I attempted to refund Gragas after his rework (I still had an in-client refund available at this time as well), but I had several skins for him that were Mystery Gifted and support said that the RP for those would go back to the purchasers, many of whom I no longer communicate with. Recently I've heard they don't even refund champs post rework which is sad to hear because when I buy something I expect it to remain the same.

Did Right

  1. Removal of silences and improving counterplay for assassins in general. They're making gameplay more interactive on both sides and I like that a lot.

  2. Removal of a lot of point and click strength. (Sion's point and click stun for example). I like seeing stuff that's dodgeable and aimable. This goes back to more interaction for both players, which I like.

  3. SR changes in general. I love the new jungle and how it encourages more interaction (key word!) from junglers by reducing how much they can farm without reducing the benefits of farming. The new SR in general also just looks gorgeous. Can't say I'm a big fan of how emphasized sustain is in the jungle right now, but hopefully the meta or tweaks can work around that. Glad to see the WW and Fiddlesticks nerfs to address this.

Trinityunicorn12/10/2014, 6:16:54 PM1 votes

Right:
Addressing the toxicity in games

Wrong:

Reworks w/o heeding what the player base is saying. I feel like a great many things are forged from ideas, then brought live and no matter what people say about it, the course is set already because the work has been completed before comments are even made on it. Also there is no centralized information flow, its here its there, it on surrender @ 20 or Reddit or in an announcement area or on the boards. So people miss stuff.

Right: Interesting, unique champions. Wrong: Leaverbuster and the new jungling.

right: Visual Updates for serveral champs wrong: Sona rework

BallisticMouse12/10/2014, 3:02:59 AM1 votes

Pros

  • New Map
  • New Items
  • Improved Jungle (Still needs some work/balance)

Cons

  • Ranked Restrictions work poorly
  • Not enough balance for champions
  • Making assassins, or certain roles, way stronger than others

Riot needs to focus game balance before adding more imo.

Entering Season 5 with still one NA server.

I'm just under the impression that they simply don't care because their HQ is on the 'good' side of the country. Until they actually put a damn server in Chicago or Philly or New York, I'll continue to be salty about this.

What I think Riot did wrong: Not fixing connection problems the east coast faces
