Well it's hard to guess what others are thinking. It could be because:

A: It's interpreted as a -tine suffix, and they come to the conclusion that it is a feminine modifier. (I can't think of anything with -tine, at the moment, so I haven't looked into it). OR B: Because Tine is a woman's name.
