Godzilla #1 died to the oxygen destroyer in the first movie. A weapon that dissolved oxygen in everything within it's effective radius.
Godzilla #2 died having a melt down after beating Destroyah, a creature created from the oxygen destroyer weapon. This godzilla died from absorbing far too much radiation and had a meltdown similar to that of a nuclear powerplant. However his meltdown was potentially world threatening as he would burn a hole down to the center of the earth and cause massive tectonic disruption and potentially core disruption.
Godzilla #3 was the baby Godzilla, that saved the earth from Godzilla #2's meltdown, (see the above ^) by absorbing the radiation and using it to become fully matured. Thus taking his place as the third Godzilla in the series. He is the current Godzilla within the Toho Godzilla series.

Godzilla. Released in 2014. This reboot was so successful that not only does it have a sequel being made right now, (scheduled to be released in 2018) it also inspired Toho to make another Godzilla movie which is scheduled to be released in 2016, next summer to be exact.
I have watched and owned literally every single one of these Godzilla movies with the exception of Always: Sunset on Third Street 2.
