Magnetism is cause by a dynamo of rotation of an object with a liquid core that conducts electricity to create a magnetic field.
Thats how our earth works, the molten core made out or liquid iron rotates and produces the magnetic shell that blocks the solar winds of hyper charged particles flying though space. The aurora is due to this, where the poles are and the magnetic field comes out of the earth and absorbs the solar winds.
Im probably fucking wrong, but I just trying to remember astronomy class.
The reasons why things are magnetized are vague, but something about conducting magnetism before forming a solid, any how the flow of the rotation decides which way is north, because the earth is a giant magnet.

BTW THE POLES WILL SWITCH AND CUASE AN ALL TIME LOW IN MAGNETIC FIELD AND OUR ATMOSPHERE BEING WEAK WILL NOT DEFLECT ALL THE SOLAR WINDS CUASE MORE CANCER, IM NOT JOKING, BUT THEIR WILL BE AREAS NOT AT THE POLES WERE YOU CAN SEE THE AURORA! WIN-WIN! MORE CANCER AND BEAUTY IN THIS WORLD. Not anytime soon though. We'll all be dead. Don't worry.
