I play her on my secondary "fun" account and even there "OMG, this Riven can't can't animation cancel," "nub riven," and I'll often see jungle camp my lane. Hell one game their mid Yasuo came up to screw me over.
This is just me, but I've really been trying to become decent enough with her (currently Level 5 mastery, but I got it mostly through playing her Jungle most games) because she was the first Champion I really enjoyed playing and would lead me to picking up Ahri. My friend bought her and the Redeemed skin for me back in late season 4 and after I fed hardcore on her never picked her up again.
Short of it: want to play her at an acceptable level in honor of my friend who's spent quite a bit on the game for me. Tried to pay her back in equal.

Most importantly, custom game>bots>custom game>bots>custom game>bots>custom game>bots>custom game>bots>custom game>bots...etc Because mastering her mechanics is basically a game of it's own, so trying to learn her laning, strategy and general League stuff at the same time as mastering her mechanics, is too much to ask of anybody.

BastionKross3 votesRiven has had years of poor PR. As have a couple other champs. If you want to turn that around, you're going to have to do things that improve the image of the players that main that champion.
And no, this isn't just being a saint while playing Riven or saying stuff like "Hey, guys! I'm a Riven main that isn't ragequitting right now!". You're going to have to do some image repair. Maybe start streaming or unloading vids to youtube and be a positive influence on the community. BoxBox can only do so much by himself, and even he slips up and gets salty from time to time. Getting salty once in a while is fine for most other champ mains, but everyone is going to be more critical of a Riven main's behavior. You can't afford slip ups like that.
Worst comes to worst, do what the big companies do when they need to repair their image; bribe people. Everyone loves RP giveaways. A few years ago there was a thread that you had to post something creative in about Christmas and League, and five or six posters were randomly chosen and got sent RP codes. The same guy did these type of giveaways for three or four years in a row, and he was always welcomed to any threads he appeared in.
Arya Riven1 votesThere is also a big difference between Riven Mains, people who like playing Riven, and "Riven Mains" people who play her whenever she is strong because they want freelo. "Riven mains" tend to be far more toxic because they think the champion is easy and will rank them up, basically FotM players. When they are failing they get angry and look for a reason why the OP Riven isn't winning them freelo. Riven Mains understand Riven is nor OP, perhaps marginally too strong in high tier play. But not freelo nor easy. So they are less likely to be toxic as they know 'eh I fucked up and Jayce counters me anyway'.
BastionKross1 votesThat's not a problem unique to Riven, although it does affect her more. FotM mains drag down the mains of all champs unfortunate enough to catch their eye. How can the average player discern a Riven main from a "Riven main"? You can't, not without doing some detective work first. And no one is actually going to look up if that toxic Riven was a genuine main or not; best just to chalk it up to a Riven main being a Riven main and move on.
That's not a fair attitude to have, but since when has human rationale been fair?
If you want to change that attitude, it's not going to be a short walk. One idea is that you could police your own. Get a bunch of Riven mains together, and make it known that real Riven mains don't AFK, don't flame, don't be salty, etc. In fact, real Riven mains go out of their way to be nice and help their teams. Really earn those honors after a match. It'll take some time, but that kind of movement can really catch on.

Like, I honestly can't think of another champion who's skill floor and ceiling are that far apart. Playing against a bad Riven vs a good Riven is almost like playing against 2 different champions

Riven is unlikely to beat you unless the player is more skilled. That is healthy. The problem people have with Yasuo is good or bad, fed or behind Yasuo does just about as good by mid game. Riven gets shut down if she fails laning. And doesn't regain that power until full builds.
