Let's play: Pick a Champion!

Hi guys!

So, I'm in the market for a new champ. Have about 5k IP saved up. Will probably have 6300 by the end of the week based on how often I play.

I play tanks. Can't play assassins. Really bad at ADCs, but I can play a mean support, jungle, and top lane.

So, who do I already own/play?

Top: Chogath DrMundo Gangplank Jax Kennen (Wish I'd never bought him... can't play him for shit) Malphite Maokai Nasus Nocturne Ryze Riven Singed (Another one I wish i'd never bought) Tryndamere (Same story) Sion (Bought him back when he was actually the terrifying top laner who could never die) Teemo Trundle Yorick Vladimir

Jungle: Chogath Jax LeeSin Malphite Maokai MasterYi Nocturne Olaf Trundle XinZhao Udyr Garen

Mid: Malzahar Swain TwistedFate Some Top Laners flex into mid, but again... I don't play mid much

ADC: Twitch Sivir Tristana Ashe

Support: Volibear Alistar Blitzcrank Most of my AP Top Laners double as supports, since they are mostly utility tanks anyway.

5 Favorite Picks Top: Malphite Chogath Maokai Olaf Trundle

Jungle: XinZhao Malphite Nocturne Chogath Maokai

Support: Alistar Maokai Malzahar Chogath Malphite

(FYI... don't hate on the Space AIDS support. End of lane phase, my ADC and I are usually 4/0/4 or 5/0/5 each.)

Now... I still have no idea who the hell to buy, but I really would like to pick up someone with an incredible initiation and some really decent tankiness. They don't NEED to deal damage, but it would be nice for them to provide something other than "BOOM, CC."

Anyway... ideas?

Edit:

Thanks for all the advice, guys!

I picked up Shyvana, and she's been a ton of fun. A very good alternate pick for when Malphite gets picked/banned away from me.

Think next buy is going to be Darius or Vel'Koz. :)

Shyvana Weak to kiting, and overpowering sustain, and that's about it.

  • Peel? ✓
  • Initiation?✓
  • Tankiness? ✓
  • Damage? ✓

Great top, great jungler, solid sustain, great clear times, manaless. Cinderhulk is immense on her.

Zac definitely zac, hes tanky and can dish out both damage and cc

Also, if you want another mid laner/top, Galio can be pretty great. He plays more like an AP caster than a tank though.

Shyvana is a pick you might want to look into. (Edit: Removed Sej since OP stated he didn't like her playstyle)

Pros:

  • High innate damage output
  • Mixed damage
  • Gets very tanky later on
  • Good initiation post-6
  • Good waveclear
  • Can pick up the odd solo kill

Cons:

  • Minimal CC
  • Low mobility without ult; can be kited
  • Bad ganker
  • Weak early, especially vs. ranged enemies (No poke)
  • Can't escape bad engages
  • Generally viewed as weak; you might get flamed.

Best Use: Dive into the enemy team in dragon form and cause chaos with Burnout and Twin Fang. If they try to fight around you they will take enormous amounts of damage from your Cinderhulk/Sunfire (whichever you got) as well as your Burnout active AND dragon-form passive AND your twin-fang Cleave. Ideally they wind up running from you in opposite directions and splitting themselves up. And you can do that while still building pure tank and being a nightmare to kill. She can jungle but she's not the best at it, but some rare teams will let you pseudojungle with a double-Smite comp if you ask nicely. Just remember your early game isn't great and you're not going to be able to escape ganks, failed engages, or other problematic situations very easily. If you manage to get extremely fed you can turn into a raid boss on par with Nasus, carrying entire games yourself, but this is exceptionally rare. You fall off super-late-game like most tanks do once ADCs start completing their later items and become able to actually chunk you.

Post the second. I just noticed you don't have JarvanIV. Another one worth looking into.

Pros:

  • Spectacular initiation
  • Good damage even when full tank
  • Flexible; can top, jungle, and occasionally support (though the latter might get you flamed)
  • Very good ganker
  • Reasonably mobile

Cons:

  • Rough early lanes
  • High mana usage
  • Ult benefits from coordination
  • Prone to 'Helping' (Can trap teammates with his ult)

Best Use: Jarvan causes chaos by jumping on people and locking them down in Cataclysm, forcing people to use their mobility skills or Flash to get out of his way. He's also got some armor shred in his Q, an AOE slow, and his flag gives attack speed AND can be teleported to! He can go top (though it's not great) or jungle and generally be an annoying tanky bastard. If you put some damage on him he can whack people quite hard with his passive. Watch his mana though, he's very prone to running out of it if he's jumping around making things happen.

Edit: If you like, I own both Shyvana and J4 and used to play them a bunch; I'd be happy to show you some things in a custom or co-op game before you buy them.

Darius I always choose him when I go top, he is great at bullying the enemy top and is a nice mix of tank and damage. Once you get your hook and your dunk, its all over ubless you face a scary fed Zed .

Nautilus Sejuani Hecarim Shyvana (if played right you basically carry, although not too much cc) RekSai

Drackolus4/12/2015, 6:49:45 PM1 votes

Soraka! no damage, little cc, and a whole lotta usefulness. And Leblanc level squishy. Personal bias aside, Nautilus can do a good support and jungle, and Leona can tank-carry as a support. IMO, until Naut support became a thing, Leona was the only -true- tank support, ThreshTaricBlitzcrank actually not being that tanky and Braum only really tanky when his shield's up. Did a game as DrMundo support once that was awesome. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think I'll go do it again.

Hecarim Is doing real well up top currently. And he has 2 forms of initiation. I need to pick him up again. I had a lot of fun with him during the pre-season. :)

Sejuani Leona Sion Alistar My favorite tanks. Also you can try my favorite champion (Lissandra) at mid/top if you're planning on mages. She has a tank's utility and a mage's damage.

I know you say you're a bad ad, but I think you should pick up jinxJinx . after you get used to landing her skillshots, shes fairly easy to use and the high velocity of her auto attacks make it easy to farm. kiting enemied in a teamfight is also fairly easy because of the bonus movespeed from her passive. shes really fun to play overall.

Hatless Casual4/8/2015, 9:06:50 PM1 votes

If you want a support that's tanky you can always go Braum or Leona for jungle there's Amumu for top you can build Diana good as well.
