They always had over the top explosions that were not warranted at all. Things just exploded out of nowhere.

it was that bad even in the first series, the difference being that A) they couldnt do those kinds of explosions cheaply back then B) there were just as many but they were instead sparks and smoke.

Yeeeeep. They've always done this. The explosions weren't all that amazing, but before they used to combine their weapons and super explode the poor bastards. They still do that now I believe.... Power Rangers hasn't changed a bit despite what everyone wants to say.
