Serious question here: Why the fuck are teachers always against wikipedia? Theres such far more important things going on in the world and yet teachers always need to 'take a stand against wikipedia.' Like jesus fuck calm down its not like people intentional falsify information 24/7 just to make your students get bad grades.

one time a class mate went onto the First Person Shooter Wiki page and changed it to something like "A game based around My Little Pony" and then they proceeded to get banned from editing anything else.

must have been a new page that was still being edited or an older one that hadnt been properly protected. the majority of wiki has been protected for 3 years now.

to be perfectly honest, any encyclopedia isn't sufficient for really deep research work. the "everyone edits" thing is just another point.

In highschool all of my teachers were against it completely. In college all of my teachers told me to start there, because it has the sources you're looking for in its citations. It has all of the sources that are much more specific, and all you have to do is look up the works that wikipedia cited for real research.

becuase wiki is shit it can be edited also smaller ages about less know things dont get watched so edits can stay for long times also if ur only using wiki you did no research all you did was copy paste and as a teacher that is irritating as hell its pure laziness this world isnt about what you know its about knowing how to find it out and if the nfo seems kinda believable it will stay even longer there are lots of little facts that are changed that only experts would notice (aka a teacher)

also trolls i knew people who would make viruses and infect peoples comps just because so im sure there are poeple out there who change info and laugh cuz they know someone believes it but thats not the reason

the reason is that wiki gives shotty info is unreliable and unless you alread know the info why would you trust something with that kind of tract record?

IMPORTANT: A great way to use wikipedia without using wikipedia: Read the evidence links that the article cites, and then cite those!

Also yeah you don't know who edits different wikipedia pages so its harder to discern bias. this is important for controversial historical issues like the 1945 arab-israeli war, which has different names per side and each side refuses to acknowledge the other side's name.
