The amusing thing about Vlad is that as long as an item has AP and/or HP, it's good on you.
Granted, there are definitely some items that are better than others (items that have CDR, Spirit Visage and Rylai's are just better than anything else on Vlad, etc...), but the general idea is that it's very, very hard to build poorly on Vlad. Full tank Vlad is viable, full AP Vlad is viable, a mix (my personal preference) is viable.
You have to be a special type of stupid to fuck up building him.
I'll admit though, I personally snub 
on Vlad. You already have pool as your safety spell, and the stats are better on other items. I personally take 
for my armour item, which gives me more in the defensive department as well as the nice ms. I don't think it's bad, it's just that Zhonyas is primarily an anti-burst tool, and no one bursts Vlad.
EDIT: I'm also biased because the 4.11 changes didnt result in Zhonyas active + pool turning into a glorious puddle of piss. Pictured below: disappointment.
