Battle mages are mages that basically go into the middle of a teamfight and do a bunch of sustained AOE damage to the entire enemy, or they may choose to single someone out and deal lighter AOE damage to the rest of the team which is what Aurelion sol, Rumble, Ryze, Cassiopeia, Karthus, and Vladimir usually do. They have some type of defense normally, in this case Aurelion has his R. Ryze has his movement speed + mana shield. Vlad has W, rumble has his speed up thingy and Cassiopeia has her heal from E and the movement speed from Q. Karthus stays alive even after someone kills him so he doesn't really care.

Like, Aurelion doesn't really get to blindly dive because of just how specifically he has to position, but he gets to take liberties with "normal" positioning to avoid threats to accommodate that. He has not just his ult but also just some natural tank stats, a toggle for Catalyst passive, and a good excuse to have tons of movespeed for not only keeping targets in his stars' orbit but also running away.
