You don't need to unlock him though.
You can disenchant him for champion essence to use towards unlocking another champion. In fact, you HAVE to disenchant some champions to get champion essence for others, as far as I know. I haven't heard of any other way to generate champion essence.
Urgot is a 3150IP champion. That's right in the middle of the pack, so he's a completely average draw. Pretty decent in my opinion, much better than getting a 450IP champion that will barely generate any essence.

Quick side note: why do I hear a lot about rare skins from chests? Especially holiday ones? I hear a lot of people talking about getting Slay Belle Katarina, or the Candy Cane Ward skin, and, of course, my pull from the first chest Riot gave to me. XD
