About Doran's shield?
After the nerf, Doran's shield still costs 440g. In every situation, Doran's Blade and Ring are better.

Unless you want health regen and reduced damage from basic attacks.
Yer the item is overnerfed, when you compare the cost efficiency to other doran items it really pales in comparison.
The problem Doran's Shield intially had is that, even though it was supposed to be picked up for it's defensive capabilities, players were picking it up with the sole intention of going man-mode and it was working. In terms of efficiency, Doran's Shield now accomplishes what it was intended to without overshadowing other item starts (for supports, this is debateable). That being said, I think Doran's Shield is in a pretty healthy place now.
I'll start with top lane. The health regen it gives makes it ideal for passive lanes in which you wouldn't farm the Doran's Blade passive enough to really benefit from it. For champions like Shen, Wukong (in hard counter matchps), Akali (mid as well, sometimes), Mundo, and Zac, this is the preferred choice to Doran's Blade. The passive basic attack reduction also makes this the go to item when going against auto-attack reliant champs like Xin Zhao, Aatrox, Jax, and Irelia as it hits their main (if not only) damage source.
Mid lane, I've seen some melee champions that have poor early game pick it up to mitigate auto-attack harass and it works pretty well. Champions like Akali, Fizz, Diana, etc. Doran's Ring is still dominate, but as it should be for the predominantly AP lane.
As for bot lane, it's still a really viable pick up for supports. It negates a good amount of harass from ADCs and gives them some beefiness (and hp regen). ADCs prefer Doran's Blade because they're focusing on offensive damage regardless.
