Is it possible as a support? Or is there a different role I should focus on?

Doable. No matter what path you select it will take work.

The easiest way to get to gold is to carry yourself out with high impact champions. Jungle and mid are usually easiest to do this with. From Bronze through early Gold, players have a really hard time dealing with aggressive roamers like Kassadin, or high burst assassins like Zed and Diana.

This advice comes with a catch: make sure you can actually play the champions you are picking.

Can you recommend some other champions that might fit into the above categories? I'd like to build a ban-proof list that I can draw from.

These picks, when played well, are very easy to carry with if you want to get to gold.

If you can jungle well:

Lee Sin Diana Aatrox

If you can mid well:

Zed Kassadin Ahri Nidalee

Special mentions to Vayne and Renekton.

Ren can be a massive lane bully and its easy to carry your game if you play well and safe early. Vayne is a beastly carry who can single handedly wipe out a team if you sneak in for clean up, but she requires the late game in many cases.

For any solo lane you take, the emphasis is on roam. Pick someone you are confident with and win your lane. Afterwards, make sure to push your lane out and roam. Swing to lanes that are overextended and clean up. In many cases you can abuse a the fact that your lanes are losing and pick up extra kills.

Remember, don't just play these champions because I suggest them. Make sure you are familiar with them and can play them effectively before you dive into ranked with them.

Support is one of the easiest roles to carry from, you can totally do it. If you can consistently win bot lane, and control the map, you will get gold.
