You know what would make essence reaver good?

a mid tier item for laning phase.

when you compare ER to it's AP counterpart Athenes unholy grail, you realise how bad the item is, and its because it's an AWFUL thing to rush in lane. most champions you want to build the item don't want to dump 3400 gold for some mana regen, they either need it sooner then that (which is why they always get tear) or by the time you can afford the item your mana consumption isn't as big of a deal as it was during the laning phase

also if we gave ER a mid tier component it would fix the weird build situation where Vamp scepter and VF sword build into 2 different items.

so heres my reccomendation:

Runic Blade Recipe: Long sword + Long sword + Faerie charm + 400 G +20 Attack dmg +10% cooldown reduction +10% Lifesteal

UNIQUE Passive: Your basic attacks restore mana equal to between 2% and 8% of the physical damage dealt, based on your missing mana.

this gives champions like Graves Varus Ezreal Jayce MonkeyKing Pantheon and Gangplank an item to build in the laning phase to help mitigate there mana consumption issues. the laning phase is when they need it most, and Essence Reaver is never going to be good until the AD champions that want some kinda mana returns in there kit can get it when they need it most.

people wanted an AD chalice, you gave us an AD athenes, with an awkward build path. and this is my reccomendation on how to fix the "noob trap" that is ER

I would say to drop the cdr on the runic blade for another 10 ad, so that building it does not put one miles behind in terms of damage.( as compared to a BF sword and perhaps a mana pot or 2

I would suggest that the build path be item 1053 +item 1004 +320gold =Mid teir item, this would also put in the lifesteal you get from it.

a mid-tier component for manasustain would be nice, but runic-blade looks to strong. U gain 10%cdr and 10%lifesteal and the manasustain for 580g, while alone th 10%lifesteal are worth 550g. take away the lifesteal, ad 5 AD and there u go.

That item seems too strong, remove the lifesteal, have it combine with vamp scepter to make the final item which has life steal on it.

It might also help to have the passive proc on physical damage instead of (edit) just auto attacks. That way it can be used with things like Varus Q, so you don't feel like you HAVE to be in auto attack range to utilize its passive. I actually like the cooldown in the item since essence reaver really wants to be the core item for caster style adcs. Their damage should come from spells, not raw damage. Corki is a great example of this.

what if it stole 2 percent of the enemy's current mana?

I would not build the item as an ADC if it didn't give a lot of AD. Period. It's not worthwhile as a mid-tier item if it doesn't end up as a large ticket item for ADCs. The fact that it builds into a big ticket item means it can be bought (albeit not 100% of the time).

Why should I upgrade the runic blade? It has every single stat Essence Reaver has, just less. Unique passives exist for this exact reason: give you a cool new effect for upgrading your item.

You also make hitting the 40% cdr cap as an ad caster really fast (3.8k, same as rushing infinity edge): build runic blade, boots of lucidity and a brutalizer. Currently you'd need the completed reaver or build two brutalizer items of which you need to upgrade one before building the second to accomplish this (adding a significant 1.3k gold at least to the process).

I think it's better to make the Reaver build out of two plain faery charms, perhaps give it 6 mana/5s to accomodate for these stats.

I still think they don't even need to create a new item; just decrease the cost by 700g for the final combine, and add Forbidden Idol into the recipe. It has the CDR and mana stats already, and would explain where the hell they come from when you make the item in the first place. That way, you end up spending 1500g on the mana regen and vamp sceptre, giving life steal, cdr, mana regen and 10AD, then build into a BFS and finally ER. Simple, very minor change, makes the item slightly more efficient, and its build more efficient, without actually increasing the overall gold efficiency of the item itself, just your item efficiency in the run-up.

you need to make sure so that champions wont just buy it for the mana regen, and then sell it afterwards when the laning phase is done
