Riven Needs A Nerf

Metalmaniac··3 votes·598 views

She's just ridiculously tanky for building straight DPS. Instead of taking off from the DPS side of her though, which is the fun part, the tanky side should be curbed a little bit. Suggestion: My idea, which would probably not change much for the Riven player, is to have her shield decay rapidly over the duration. This way she can still front head-on burst with her shield, but sustained damage would still be effective against her. What do you guys think?

I honestly don't see her chosen very often, I know it sounds crazy, but compared to other champions she just isn't nearly as popular. Also there is more bad Riven players than good, although her difficulty is low. ALSO she really isn't that to play against, anyone can counter anyone with the right items. Therefore, for now, her kit is fine and really doesn't need change.

http://www.lolking.net/champions/ She's 12th on popularity with 18.87% and has a 57.82% ban rate. To put it in perspective, there are over 100 champions and she has the third highest ban rate in ranked.

I'm not entirely sure so I'll ask to double check, what is the point you're trying to make with that? There are always going to have to be top percentage bans, that doesn't inherently mean they deserve a nerf. Say you nerf the top three, then there is a new top three, so then you nerf them too right? It's just going to repeat until no champions have any power or enjoyment in playing. All champions have their counters and there are tactics outside of counterpicking to shut down what some people consider "OP" champions.

If anything, the problem with Riven is the same problem with the meta for top lane right now in general, there are a slew of champions that can be straight up tanky and still just melt your team or take up enough resources to essentially make team fighting impossible. I'd rather see Riot work on overall balance and shifting of gameplay into a more counter play capable format then see them just hit the nerf switch champion by champion.

This suggestion is exactly to do that. It doesn't make her different to play, it just makes her easier to counter play, not having a giant shield by building straight AD that lasts 2.5 seconds every 4 seconds. The point of bringing up the statistics was to argue against her not being chosen that often.

And how do expect Riot to work on overall balance if not by changing the champions that are prime suspect of having low counter play?

Riven has high mobility (4 gap closers), high durability (low cool down high hit point shield), high damage (Passive + Ultimate), high burst (Q, W, R), and high sustained damage (Low CD's).

This nerf wouldn't change any of the fun parts of her while giving her some counter play.

Alright, I'm glad I asked for clarification because I thought you were trying to infer that ban rate warrants nerfs just as a standard. As far as your suggested solution, I'm not certain that would really solve the issue, if anything were to happen I'd suggest lowering the scaling ratio on the shield that way it doesn't get as absurd as it can. Her having the shield isn't really the issue, it's that her shield is ridiculously large and requires no focus in build pathing to get that way.

As far as how to get to the overall balance, I don't expect Riot to really do much of anything, from what I see and my perspective they are pretty happy to just let power creep go without adjusting anything then just nerf something into the ground whenever enough people complain. Some Rioter mentioned the top lane changes coming out over a large span of time, but I think that's the exact opposite of what you want, because that reads to me as giant nerfs to specific champions while not fixing the broken aspects of the top lane meta game at all. If they were willing to just throw the entire gold income, support scaling, trinket using, jungle rework out all at once, they should be equally willing to go to large lengths to fix the state of top lane.

I honestly think they try to nerf too many things at once, hitting champs in multiple areas of gameplay, making them unplayable. I understand it's hard but it's common science to manipulate one variable at a time.

I think we can both agree that Riven's tankiness in her shield is the main problem with her counterplay though.

You make a good point, adjusting one variable at a time is better as far as methodology is concern, I just think we disagree on what that one variable should be. You believe it should be a champion, I believe it should be an overarching champion characteristic that causes the issues in top lane meta.

Definitely. And I do think that at some point it should be scaled back or adjusted in some manner, but only when it's in line with other changes to top lane champions, that way it doesn't push her out of being picked at all.

I like your idea.

Good idea, at least it'd be a step in the right direction to see where it goes.
