4.4GB Update?

Can someone explain why this new update is 4.4GB?

Honestly I don't even understand why this game in general is 5+GB

Shit most PS2 games were less than 5gb file size and had lots more content.

im not beating around the bush im being serious. Like this game isn't big, it's got a good amount of characters and a few levels. The main level (sums rift) should only be about 50-100mb and that's stretching it

it's about the resolution. it's designed to look decent in 1080 and maybe even 4k. ps2 games were 480 with very few sometimes breaching the 720 phenomenon near the end of it's life-cycle.

so 99.9% of the game's information is merely just pixels that the naked human eye can barely perceive. a little bit of it is data that determines gameplay mechanics.

just as with van goghs paintings when you paint in layers things start to look thick. same goes with digital paitings.

Pixel count doesn't determine game size. If that were the case then I could upscale the PS2 until 4k and see a file size increase. League literally looks like a PS2 game. The only reason people disagree is because they see the polygons and textures from far away

pixel count doesnt directly determine size, but when you're working with programs that are designed to make it easier on the artists by allowing layers, fills, special lighting meshes, etc. to be used then flattened into a model without using the game engine to compensate or relying heavily on the game engine's ability to self generate those effects it can create larger file sizes by just simply painting a stroke multiple times since the program remembers all of those strokes up to a certain point. then there are color variations and 4k can technically use 1.7 million colors thanks to the wide color gamut. those color also have to be translated into data for HDR, 10 bit, etc. players (that is if it's even being used).

then they have the updater and the interfaces that are packaged with videos and recorded gameplay among other things. im not certain if those are embedded from a data vault or if they're packaged into the installer.

if you've never played league on mega ultra settings then you wont get to see the amount of detail in the characters and terrain, but trust me - the game doesnt look like a ps2 game. it genuinely looks like a modern day game, but with the specific limitations used to make it a moba in gameplay mechanics it still has that throwback feel to it.

ps2 games did not have complete character models. gta III and kingdom hearts are primary examples of this. instead the models were blocky and slightly undefined in areas. in league however the models have individual fingers and limbs as well as flowing clothing and hair.

League is ~10 GB. Most of that are files that get the client and game to work, not actual in game assets.
