It actually doesn't make any sense.

I can't link the OP.GG because the name and shame rule, but I'll post a screenshot.

Gold last season. 2-8 in placements (3-8 at time of screenshot) Platinum 1.

Even if they managed to duo with a former challenger in their promos they shouldn't have placed that highly.

Maybe during that gap between preseason and end of season rewards they somehow grinded to challenger MMR? But that seems even more unlikey.
