Is smurf detection even real?

I'm playing on a low-level account, and it's genuinely not fun for me because I keep getting placed with people who act like they just stumbled out of the tutorial. I played 15+ games tonight and literally have an 85% win rate (even with leavers), and I'm still stuck playing with people who make bots look challenging and it's not really fun for me.

Like if smurf detection is real, how long does it take to kick in?

There's no such thing as "smurf detection." Your MMR will adjust as you win games. In the meantime, feel free to play on your non-smurf account if you're not having fun. Nobody's making you play with real new people except yourself.
