Poll: What compelled Zed to decapitate his master?

As all of you may or may not know, Zed went to his masters temple to take the box and perfect his techniques. The master greeted Zed and his followers he brought, and let Zed in and proposed that he go and destroy the box for his master to lead him to the balanced path (lol) along with his students. Zed all of a sudden cried in pain as Shen (masters son) and Zed's students stood outside waiting, and Zed came back out with his masters head.

So what happened in there that led Zed to killing his master?

My theory is, rather than destroying the box, he embraced it and the shadows. Surely something like that has to hurt, or have some sort of effect on him, hence the cry. Then he beheaded his former master, because there was no purpose in keeping him alive, and because of the master's favor over his son, rather than Zed.

It could've been an ambush as well. Coming this far, it was very unlikely that Zed would've destroyed the box, especially with all of his emotions he had, so it could've been planned.
