The Balance team needs to read this.

Warwick will potentially be very OP next patch because he could end up abusing item 3190 new passive with his own damage reduction, going a hybrid of HP and Damage while being powerfully tanky in team fights.

#Note

  • Warwick's E Primal Howl already offers a 55% damage reduction (At Max Rank) for 2.5 seconds with a built in flee effect that slows the enemies around him by 90% for 1 second.

  • The core items on Warwick already make him a very hard enemy to shut down, keep Warwick in check as ADC's are already too strong and WW could end up buying this item for his own good and the ADC's good to succeed in team fights without effort.

They're probably going to be iterating on the new locket effect a little bit more before they jump to nerfing WW just on the chance that he would build it. If the locket changes actually go through at all. And just to be clear, the new effect is essentially old maokai ult - which people usually didn't make proper use of anyways.

Not to mention, WW isn't the guy anybody wants to focus down first in a fight. He's the guy you want to ignore or stun just long enough to put his E on CD, so there's really not that much to abuse. The delayed locket activation is a dead giveaway that you should hold your big spells until you get them away from that zone, so even if he had both effects up it'd take a special kind of moron to spend any real effort on attacking him during.

Quick thoughts on pro/con playing against new locket

Pros -Doesn't get affected by +shield/healing effects. -Enemies can be displaced out of the effect, or can be kited away from the effect, whereas old locket simply threw up a huge shield for everybody. -90sec CD means you can play around it's downtime if the next fight breaks out within that window -Extremely lackluster build path means that until the enemy can afford to finish the full item there isn't much difference fighting them, and getting partway through its build path essentially locks the player into finishing that item before anything else for the sake of efficiency

Cons -Under perfect circumstances % dmg reduction can be busted AF just like true damage -Item is dirt cheap -8 second duration because reasons

Well, I'm pretty sure that would be true, if it wasn't for the fact that damage reduction stacks multiplicatively. First, damage reduction from armor and magic resist is calculated. Then, whatever remains of damage after that will be calculated with for instance Warwick or Galio's damage reduction abilities.

So basically, if your armor gave 10% physical damage reduction, a 100 damage ability would deal 90 damage. But Warwick would have his E up, giving him 55% damage reduction. It wouldn't give him 65% damage reduction. It would give 10% of 100, + 55% of 90 = 10+49.5 = 59.5% damage reduction. Which means, the more damage reduction you have built into your kit, the less effective the new Locket active is going to be.

45% is the remaining damage people can do to Warwick after resistances and penetration are calculated. Locket will then calculate 35% of the remaining 45% damage, which will be way lower difference than someone else who doesn't have an ability like that. Not to say it will be useless, but it will definitely not be as good as on other tank-type champions.

I think the biggest abuser of this item would actually be a zone-type champion like Illaoi, who if you dive on her, she can bust out a million damage within the next 2-5 seconds. With this item, she will also take 35% less damage for the full duration of her ultimate, which forces you away from her.

They will definitely iterate on the locket effect, and I don't think the % damage reduction is going to do what they want at all and will not make it to live.

A % damage reduction like this is more powerful the tankier you already are. Locket is a support item designed for tanky supports to keep their ADC alive. 35% less damage on an ADC doesn't mean anything; if they're staying in the zone and taking damage, they die in 1.35 seconds instead of 1.0 seconds. Whee.

Especially with a delay, it simply is not functional at the intended role of the item; it becomes an item for tanks to make themselves tankier, instead of an item for supports to keep squishy targets alive.
