Crying over a game. Shameful.

Ever post allures me to play it, but I always forget to bother.

It's things like this that ruined the game for me. So many people left reviews saying it was actually psychologically damaging, overhyping the hell out of it. The reality is that the game pulls the same stuff Undertale did, except with less interesting characters, less reason to be emotionally invested, and gratuitously bad attempts at being spoopy. Graphical glitches and unusual fonts aren't scary. At most, it has some uncanny valley shit with Yuri's crazy eyes, but that's the closest to "disturbing" it ever got. And, for the record, there is nothing redeemable about Monika. She's a straight psychopathic bitch who deserves to suffer.

Quite frankly, I was sorely disappointed...Until I saw the Game Theory video detailing all of the hidden stuff in the game files which I wish was realistically accessible to the average player, because it would have actually made the experience interesting. For a game that hamfistedly instructs you on what to do with Monika, they sure as hell went out of their way to make sure nobody would find the legitimately interesting parts of the game.

Stop playing weeb games.

Her song she writes for you at the end of the game really says it all.

[Verse 2] Have I found everybody a fun assignment to do today? When you're here, everything that we do is fun for them anyway

She shows understanding that for the game you as the MC are the only thing that matters.

When I can't even read my own feelings What good are words when a smile says it all?

She shows that she has broken out of her programming and doesn't understand her new human like emotions.

And if this world won't write me an ending What will it take just for me to have it all?

[Verse 3] Does my pen only write bitter words for those who are dear to me? Is it love if I take you, or is it love if I set you free?

This is where things get darker and deeper. Everything she does is only bringing misery and pain to her friends in the game, she feels guilty for trying to take your attention for herself and wonders if she is making the right choice.

The ink flows down into a dark puddle How can I write love into reality?

If I can't hear the sound of your heartbeat What do you call love in your reality?

Like her reference in the poem "Hole in the Wall" even the smallest glimpse into our reality is blinding for her. She finally comes to the understanding that there is an infinite gulf of separation between you and her. The impossibility of her situation hits her full force.

And in your reality, if I don't know how to love you I'll leave you be.

And in the tragic final line of the song she comes to accept her fate and chooses the only way to love you that she knows how by letting us go. The song is brilliant and so full of emotional depth, I listen to it at least once a day and it still brings a tear to my eye at the end every time. Maybe I am a sucker but I love emotional gut punches like this. :D
