You know, I actually like the Champion Mastery System, But....

I wish there was a bit more too it. The actual leveling is cool. It makes you feel like you're getting somewhere and progressing. Unlocking the little Tag and the Taunt actually provides a sense of achievement. Past Level 5 there isn't anything to do though. The number just goes up and up and up. I understand that it's still "In development" and there are apparently plans to expand upon the system, but you said that about Honor and 2 years later it's still useless.

Some people have said to award Chroma Packs if you achieve Mastery which I personally agree with, but I have another, very simple suggestion.

When you hit Level 5, let us have the Champion Portrait (the one in the bottom left during gameplay) as a Summoner Icon. I mean come on, who wouldn't want to have Teemo as their summoner Icon?

I for one have not a single good thing about Champion Mastery.

  1. Over 70% of points are awarded for the outcome of the game, not actually playing a champion.
  2. Grades are completely meaningless.
  3. System doesn't promote to get better, but to get carried. Might as well AFK, doesn't matter, your team won. Here have over 1500 points for it.
  4. Half of the time grades don't even freaking load.

What I'd do:

  1. Separate Grades from Champion Mastery.
  2. Remake them into two not related with each other things that together can be called "Champion Mastery".
  3. Grades would become actual measurment of skill it's suppose to be and work as average of Grades you get playing a champion e.g Think Honour/Badge system we got now. You need to continue getting honors to keep the badge - You'd need to keep high enough grade to maintain the Skill with a champion.
  4. Remake what's left of current Champion Mastery without Grades into Champion Experience that would basically tell how long you played with a champion.

I agree that the amount of points rewarded for a Victory completely overshadows those rewarded for a Loss. There needs to be a re-balancing on this distribution and how Grades are calculated. What I am saying is that I do like the idea of Champion Mastery. Paying a Champion, learning it, preforming well, and being rewarded. Does it need more work? Yes. Does it give a sense of accomplishment nonetheless? Ya I would think so.

Vistha Kai2 votes

There is no need to change how Grades are calculated. They are the most solid thing in this Champion Mastery system. They simply need to mean a jack. Currently the best grade, S+ is like a quarter worth of points of Champion Mastery for a victory. Here lies the problem with it.

For example reward for having an average S grade after 50 games with a champion.

Bam, that's a reward that means something.

Taarki2 votes

Is it possible that they might be testing the grade system and maybe putting it into play for ranked? For example, you lost, but got an S+ rating, you might lose less LP or go even? and if you won, but got an F rating you might only win a few LP or even lose some?

Vistha Kai3 votes

Wish that was true, but I don't think people responsible for ranked experience can think that far ahead.

They did, afterall, nailed ELO system with ladders, changed the sign and called it a day.

I think most of the time you have a Rank 5 he/she will at least not feed all game long. Usually all people with the red banner icon tend to play the champion fairly well, carry, or just not feed. Obviously there could be a lot of people who are Rank 5 with a champion simply because they played them a lot and it's so easy to get that, but most of the time right now it shows they can play the champion well.

Vistha Kai1 votes

You can max champion mastery as soon as after 15 games.

I have 34 games with Vlad with 44% winrate and I'm feeding like there is no tomorrow, most of the time. If I'd start playing Vlad after Champion Mastery rolled out I'd have around 30k points and long done Rank 5. What does it say about me? Nothing, because my average KDA is about 6/7/1.

A Miss Fortune1 votes

6-7-1 isn't that bad, I mean it's negative but it's not like you purposely feed every single game. Still, I think a lot of people (mainly due to the system being new.) who reach Rank 5 are fair with their champions. Obviously the quality will have a huge decrease as time goes by.

Vistha Kai1 votes

For a person that is trying to reach 3.0 KDA at least for my Top 5 champs having 1.0 KDA is like... yeah. It's very bad.

That's the point I'm trying to make here. If Champion Mastery is to be left as is, it will become completely worthless and I don't really see Riot reworking it any time soon.

I hate this thing, Heres how it really works

IF YOU, STEAL KILLS AND YOUR A TOP LANER OR MID LANER OR ADC? + YOU UPGRADE TRINKET ez A+

I mean fuck supports and junglers right riot? I get a C+ cause i got 0/0/22 right? Cause thats not my job as sup

Or i get 1/0/8 as udyr and they ff but i still get a B? Because i did my job and got other lanes fed? K

Did you really play your champion effectively if you lost the game?

You've never played an unwinnable game before? They are fairly common, you know.

Spinning Axes3 votes

It's only unwinnable when you think it's unwinnable, if you're willing to try your hardest to come back, you wouldn't believe how many times it works.

I absolutely despise people who believe a game is unwinnable because it's 25 v 17.

Bloodhawk951 votes

games unwinnable if you got a team mate running of on his own all game long, so its a 4v5 while hes feeding a specific person.

Taarki1 votes

Its unwinnable when two people d/c and its a 3v5 and the enemy team has diamond smurfs on it and your team is just bronze 5. Maybe not the most likely scenario, but its possible and an example of an unwinnable game.

Sukishoo2 votes

25 v 17.

That's not a bad one... try 30 v 2 , now that's tough to come back from.

Celosar1 votes

I played a game once that I finished as 30-2 on Akali. Tell me that team thought they could come back!

Heh

Or where the kills are even but you are down 6 turrets and 2 or 3 dragons.

ElJanitorFrank3 votes

Obviously you can be pushed to nexus, be 0-1000, have no towers or buffs, and still win if they AFK in fountain.

But that doesn't mean they are going to AFK in fountain, meaning THEY have control over the game at this point. You can just sit back and wait for them to throw, and if they don't throw you are going to lose.

That is an unwinnable game.

The Lexer1 votes

But if you do win that game, you'll get more mastery points than the 1000/0 person on the enemy team

Jeddy0172 votes

When did anyone say "a 25 v 17 is unwinnable."?Point me at someone in this thread who said.

No,by unwinnable,we're talking about those games who Team A have 20 or 30+ kills & Team B have less than 5 or 10.OR in the case of a low kill game where the focus was more on objectives:Team A have taken 9 towers,2 inhibitors, gotten 3 or 4 dragons & the Baron buff while Team B only have 1 tower or in some cases,no towers. I played these types of games before on both sides.Don't tell me these types of games don't exist.Yes,they don't start unwinnable but they certainly can become unwinnable.

I mean with the law of infinite probability theres no auch thing as an unwinnable game

The bigger question is, why am I getting more points for going 0/10/0 and winning than going 20/0/10 and losing?

Did you really play your champion effectively if you lost the game?

That has to be by far the dumbest comment I've read all day. If you do exceedingly well in your lane (let's say you're playing graves nami bot and go 4-0) and you completely destroy your lane, as well as have good mechanics, damage dealt, and overall good decision making, i'd say you did pretty well, regardless of whether or not the game was won. The enemy team could've simply had more people that effectively played their champion than the people on your team. For example, if they have a tryndamere top that goes 7-0 and a katarina that went 5-0 it's going to be a hard game, and even though you did well, you could still be very far from ahead as a team. On average, if you play your champion effectively you will win a lot more games than someone who doesn't. However, you can't win every single game. The grading system should focus on YOUR performance for that specific game, not on the team overall.

Sure, if you phrase it in such a way that, you actually played well, but my point was that it is much harder to tell if your "good mechanics, damage dealt, and overall good decision making" were actually any good. Maybe if you had been more vocal with your team, you could have gotten them to avoid teamfights and create split map pressure, which could have won you the game.

i'd say you did pretty well, regardless of whether or not the game was won. The enemy team could've simply had more people that effectively played their champion than the people on your team. You can have the best stats on a champion in all of League, but if you cannot translate that into a win, I don't think you have really mastered the Champion, thus it should take you longer to get to Mastery 5 with them.

Also, I usually receive an A or B for games that I lose and didn't get below a 2.0 KDA. I don't really feel like I should get an A+, S, or S+ if I didn't win the game.

Stackless Python2 votes

The grades are a total joke, you can AFK the whole game and get anywhere from a C to B for ACTUALLY doing nothing, really? But if you play and go 0/5/0 you get D-. I think the player who played the game, regardless of score, should have a higher grade than the person who never showed up.

Aeolian Melodies2 votes

Yes, agreed.

I'd also like if the system was RETROACTIVE, why do I have to prove again my mastery of a champion I've been maining for nearly 5 years?

Orbv1 votes

This is my biggest qualm. I understand we can't go too far back because after patches go through, that gameplay becomes inactive and will not run with the new code. However, they can at least do a scan of who we used and make the masteries harder to attain as compensation.

I don't feel like playing Soraka just for someone to say "You don't have any experience with her......gg, this can't go well", especially when I used almost strictly her for two ranked seasons.

Rico Nasty1 votes

Yes, for sure. I would LOVE a Karma icon.

Moooose1 votes

I think Champion Mastery is a good thing, but I think they need to add more tiers. Like when you hit level 5 the icon should have a different colored gem or something small like that to show that you actually are good with the champion (meaning have an above average W/L or kda) As of now all the Champion mastery shows is that you just played a champ a lot. I think that getting frequent S+ scores should give you a little added bonus to that champion, like maybe an exclusive chroma pack skin to show that you actually know what you're doing with that champ.

ElJanitorFrank1 votes

Personally, I'll just wait until Riot builds on it. Because they have stated multiple times in many different places that this is basically just the initial test of the system to get feedback on a large scale before they start offering rewards (which they will) and offering more tiers.

Virgin Ray1 votes

It should be more levels, and every X levels you get a award and it gets better the higher your mastery level is.

Trídent1 votes

The icons should come in a later level, along with other rewards

Some ideas I came up with http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/miscellaneous/U3gsYiu1-idea-for-champion-masteries

They won't release any icon, even the shittiest ones, without a 250rp price tag on it.

TheI3igDaddy1 votes

Personally I just think this champion mastery shit is useless. Okay, so they know you're good at X champion? They could've looked it up on op.gg or some-

OH RITO, LOOK AT YA, TRYING TO DO SHIT YOU SHOULD'VE DONE A WHILE AGO RIGHT?

FastAsHeck1 votes

lol look at HotS, EVERY champion and EVERY skin have chromas that are unlocked by playing, not even an option for real money. and here they try to squeeze every single euro from us, they even sell the chroma packs that take 5 minutes to create, champion mastery has no real reward and so on. in HotS you can use the champion's picture as your portrait, and you can even unlock a special skin for each champion just by playing enough with them (master skin). and they are not bad skins, they are legit, improved versions of the original character. RIOT's greed is a bit too much IMO.

I think your mastery should be able to go up and down just like your rank. I mean, I don't think I could call myself a master of jinx if I went 0 788 every game 10000 times

Havenscythe1 votes

Preaaaaaaccchhhh ittttttt. They should take after Heroes of the Storm where you reach max level and get the hero portrait and maybe a master skin? I don't think the skin idea will be coming anytime soon but the portrait idea isn't that difficult to implement.
