Top lane is the least fun role

Remember when top lane was a skill orientated lane, even with the big 4 (Renekton, Riven, Nasus, Darius)? Those were the good times where player's mechanic and knowledge mattered and where early, mid and late game were divided into balanced portions allowing all types of champs to shine. Fast forward it now where even if there's a skill difference, most toplane matchups are impossible to win due to how few viable pick exists. What used to be bruiser lane is now an infestation of tanks, and marksmen. Want to play Jax, RIven, Irelia top? You can't because the moment you do, they will choose Ornn, Illaoi, or Maokai. Play a them? Then they will pick Jayce or Gnar or even Corki denying you all chances of counterplay. Need help from jungler? Your jungler won't give a single fuck because bot lane is all that matters. When you win your lane, and your bot lane loses, you would lose the game. When you lose the lane and your bot wins the game for you, it doesn't feel like a win because your contribution meant absolutely nothing. At least with mid lane, mages/assassins do provide some sort merit to their team like a hyper scaling veigar or a utility bot like Orianna/Anivia, or even a decently set up Kat/Ekko. You can't do that as a traditional top laner. When was the last time you saw someone like Riven/GP/Garen hard carry a game? Season 4?

I had a game last season where I was playing mid, with my top laner either a GP or Garen against a Draven counter pick. It was no surprise that the Draven was winning top lane. When my top lane ask for jungle ganks, the response was "ur lane doesn't matter". The Draven eventually got one kill and snowballed out of control because he was not a traditional top laner, and it was in the ardent censor meta.

Riot should enforce a meta if they have to like how they forced junglers to take smite and build jungle item. (For you new bloods, there was a time where jungling could be cloth + 5 pots or dorans or heart of gold instead of madreds and you still won't be considered a troll).

While I'd say that overall top is the least impactful role, I also do not see anything wrong with that. Of all the roles, I'd say Top is the most forgiving when it comes to losing lane as the only major objective in that lane is Baron. When you lose lane, the enemy laner is forced to over extend giving easy access to your Jungle for ganks... which can easily get you back into the game with minimal effort. Most Top laners will play smart and make plays around the map, which also leaves you to free farm your way back into the game most of the time. Unless you are just a complete knuckle head and feed the enemy 10 kills early into the game, it's extremely difficult for any champion currently to tower dive someone who is playing safely near their tower (without Jungle assistance).

There is nothing wrong with the lane itself. What you are complaining about are the aspects dealing with the team oriented atmosphere of League of Legends. Counter picking exists in all roles, not just Top lane. Diversity is also quite large currently in this super damage meta (with all runes giving damage). Every champion is capable of playing Top because runes give sustain and damage that has never before been in the game.

Also, who cares if the game is centered around bottom? That's where Dragons spawn every 6 minutes. Bottom is an important lane.. I believe you are seeing everything from the wrong angle. If you cannot get the counter pick on the enemy Top then play for your other lanes by roaming and teleporting so your team can have the advantage on the enemy and win fights / bot tower. If you are not thinking in this manner then that's not Riot's fault. The problems are not with the game's design, instead how you are thinking and executing.

If you want an example, there was a guy who was Top playing Malphite in one of my recent games. He was building full Magic Resist to counter the enemy Cho'Gath, he played his entire [losing] lane Top without roaming for the entire game.. doing nothing except attempting to farm and 1v1 this Cho'Gath. He complained that he didn't have help and that our team was losing him the game. Now what do you think I said to this person? I told him his lane means nothing, he should quit trying to 1v1 Cho'Gath and only buying items to counter Cho. I told him his champion is designed for team fighting and is completely useless if his team is feeding. Naturally he was pissed off because someone else was trying to tell him how to play the game, but you know what? He listened to me, and we ended up easily turning the tides on the enemy team. Our AD Carry was suddenly able to do damage behind a big fat ass Malphite and we won the game.

Your team is equally as important as you and your role are. If you sit Top all day farming, expecting your team to help you, then you are just as at fault for misplaying as your team is. Inject yourself into the game by force and make yourself important. Don't expect your teammates to baby you and carry you every single game. If you have the mentality that it's your Bot's fault for losing lane, or your Jungler's fault for not ganking for you... Then every single game will be miserable and a struggle. It's not always your job to win lane, it's not always your job to do the most damage, but it IS your job to assist your team and do everything in your power to be useful and contribute so your team has the best chance at putting a W on your match history.

Hope you can understand my logic, and good luck to you.

How many of the other traditional top laners have a point click AoE CC or any utility use to teamfight? Only Shen comes to mind. Want me to list the traditional top laners? Darius Gangplank Garen Fiora Irelia Jayce Jax Kayle LeeSin Malphite Nasus Nidalee Olaf Pantheon Renekton Riven Rumble Ryze Singed Sion Teemo Trundle Tryndamere MonkeyKing XinZhao Vladimir Urgot Poppy Mordekaiser

All of these guys were possible picks and you can match any two of them against each other and expect a power struggle without a snowball dominance.

Just how many of all these top laners are viable (in a sense of not being shut down hard from a counterpick) now? Just because your team carries you does not make losing a lane due to counterpick fun.

Lol what? I've seen Yasuo, Talon, Fizz, Karma, Lulu, Malzahar, Rengar, Vayne, and Shaco playing Top lane recently (in my games), and even got completely STOMPED by a Yorick just a few games ago. There are an INSANE amount of champions that can be played Top right now. I am not sure what exactly you are going on about however it sounds like you are just complaining because you (or your teammates) do not know how to handle unusual champions.

You said something along the lines of: "I had a game last season where I was playing mid, with my top laner either a GP or Garen against a Draven counter pick. It was no surprise that the Draven was winning top lane." First off, let me explain something.. Draven DOES NOT counter Garen in lane. Garen can completely block Draven's E with his W, and he can remove the slow from it with his Q. Let's not forget, Garen does NASTY damage on squishy champions.. and regenerates in lane when he stands back for a while. Draven has NO sustain, and definitely cannot deal with Garen's damage. Then we have the fact that, Garen can go FULL TANK and still kill Draven with ease, while Draven has to build full damage to even hope to kill Garen.

You shouldn't blame the game and it's design for a player's lack of skill, or being outplayed.

Ornn is trash now and was pretty much killed off with his latest nerf.

Currently sitting at a 48% win rate: http://na.op.gg/champion/ornn/statistics/top
