Not sure if they allow you but in Canada you're not allowed to us graphing calculators in college/university. Graphic calculators are pretty worthless unless you need it for a math serious profession.

I was expected to save formulas ect on my calculator. If you forgot to save on you were pretty much screwed during exams.

if you go into anything requiring calculus, they will not let you use a graphing calculator anymore. no calc, no stat, no engineering, no linear algebra. physics? well, maybe.

Odd, in Germany they have started requiring graphing calculators for higher calculus classes.

It's considered dumb to do it manually if you have proper tools available, because it's needlessly time consuming and prone to errors with complex problems.

Every test still has a manual section to show you can do it and understand what's going on, but those problems are much simpler than the ones you are required to do with the Calculator.

That is not true at all for me XD Every professor requires you to have a graphing calculator. What would be the point in memorizing them if every job lets you use a calculator?

Long story short, some universities still consider it 'cheating' to use tools available to you. Once you graduate, life is an open book test and many doctors I've met still refer to manuals to confirm their knowledge. I happen to be at one of those distinguished universities that thinks you need to have the formulas memorized to understand/solve the mathematics behind them.

It isn't cheating when a calculator is simply a means to get the answer. You can still mess up royally if you don't understand the mathematics you're using. But, rules are rules and I have no reason to say they can't believe it helps me learn.

In the USA they make people use them way too early. Like middle school early. I only started using them come college, and math profs would have no calculator sections and calculator sections (where the difficulty was adjusted to assume you're using a calculator with all the formulas provided to you).
