Pro Tip: Don't play Ranked (reasons inside)

Here's the "catch". There's not enough people on the leader to give your ranking an accurate placement if you play at the start of the >year.

Like seriously http://euw.op.gg/statistics/tier/

EuW population last year around September was ~2.5 or so million players. Right now it sits at 45.000 players in total. Your rank shows as a comparison with those other 45.000 players. Now with the 2.5 million in the past year.

This is the "disadvantage" of playing ranked in the first month. You will drop tiers, you will most likely get >bronze or silver unless you are REALLY good. Because the system doesn't have who to compare your performance with.

Last year, Plat 4 at 0lp (which I had) was in the best 200.000 players on the server. There's not even that many >players right now that it was last year from plat 4 to challenger.

Edit: just checked Korean server. They got 50% of their population in bronze atm (140.000 players total). While we only got 33% in bronze on euw. But on the good side, they got 3 players in dia 3 and 1 player in dia 4. We only got players in dia5

Like really, its just new ranked year symptoms. Wait for 1-3 months and you could easily get your last year placement.

In short: if you play ranked now, majority of the community isn't ranked, so you will be classified only on those who ARE ranked, they are very few and out of them all, you'll most likely drop tiers unless you go 10-0. (even going 9-1 made few players I know drop 3-4 divisions)

My understanding is was similar to this put described differently.

NOT FACT - Just opinion and understanding from discussions with non riot employees.

For example any given time (using arbitrary numbers) maybe 60% of the game population should be in bronze, maybe 60-75% in silver, 75-85% gold, 85-95% plat, and that last 5% in diamond, masters, challenger.

So lets say Player A comes along, last year he was ranked g3 meaning that last year during the season a max of 25% of the player base was "better"/ranked higher than he is.

So now its preseasons and the same player is finishing up provisionals.. Theres only 100,000 people currently ranked, and of those 100,000, 50,000 were your diamond/challenger/masters players. Now you have over 50% of the "actual game population" who should be in diamond + but the system only allows for the top 5% to be in diamond +.

Player A does fairly well in his placements going 8-2 yet still over 35% of the current server population performed better than him and so the upper ranks are virtually filled. As with the lower population a lower hard quantity of players can fit into those percentiles. So at the time placements finish for this player he is at around the 65th percentile landing him in silver.

If player A were to wait a month to complete placements, you would see a much greater sample of the player base ranked. In this situation the exact same record might put him in 80th percentile if now say there 1M ranked accounts as opposed to 100,000, landing him mid gold.. If the tiered ratings are based on an assumed % of the player base being in each tier rather than a hard coded win/loss, kda weighing this would make perfect sense as to why people drop so severely in the early days of ranked.

I'm curious to see some samples of 5 man premades with greatly fluctuating ranks and how each individual does. Like if I did all my placements in a 5 man group containing lets see ( S3, g2, b3, s5, b1) I'd like to see what the impact that has on both the gold players placement and the bronze's.

Interesting, but how would that mean youre likely to drop?

My understanding is that since there are so few ranked players currently, the system is harsher in terms of "how much you're worth".

Think it like this, being classified n1 player out of 10 players is different than being n1 in 100.000 players.

Pro Tip ... Don't go 3-7 in provisionals. Like Me. Back to bronze I go!

It's not that, people going 9-1 got demoted from silver to bronze.

Gotcha

What if we've played like 9 ranked games and wait 3 months before completing placements?

Don't know, try it maybe.
