I'm just wondering since I haven't played in a while, if I should bother building a ROA on toplane Maokai, or if I should replace it with another offtank or tank item. What do you guys think?

Sunfire/IBG combo is a lot better IMO. Gives defenses plus the aoe slow/burn/damage etc etc. not to mention that that item combo is somehwat busted right now
I main Maokai and I rarely build it. I tend to just go full tank. The only time I build RoA is when I'm way ahead on gold.
You should probably wait until the mage update before really trying it, as the item will get adjusted. Though as a prediction, The new RoA looks as if it will have a reduced base stats, but at a reduced cost, so it may be good if you are able to rush it quickly.
They main question with RoA even now is, is it better to build an AP Bruiser, or a hyper tank. And the Bruiser build is probably a little better at the moment, given that the really strong tank items arn't good right now, yet Bruiser items like IBC are pretty ridiculous. Also, I've seen RoA on Maokai in the LCS recently, so there is probably some merit to it.
Just go straight sunfire, spirit, gauntlet or w/e.
In this meta its just better to have the sunfire right now.
Yes, it's good for the raw stats for giving him a little bit of everything he needs, but after the mage update it will be even better.
