Can we give riven higher cooldowns?

Keyoshi··135 votes·8,238 views

I absolutely hate riven right now. I thought champions who had no resources were supposed to have high cool downs? Riven isn't one of them. Problems with her is she always has cool downs up. You have like....a 3 second window to where she cant cast anything and thats it. Once she gets 40% cdr she's impossible to duel/chase or anything. She's supposed to be a fighter but shes more of an assassin.

The problem is so many people main riven on this forum, and they'll say she apparently gets shut down even though she has an aoe execute and 2 hard cc.

also 'cc counters her' AS DOES IT EVERY SINGLE CHAMP.

But shh, the mains are here. Hide.

Really this. Honestly Riven is one of those binary champions. She'll either faceroll your team MasterYi style if you don't play any of her counters Garen Quinn Teemo Singed, or she'll be made completely irrelevent if you do. It's the Volibear problem. It's why Katarina is almost never played in LCS, despite being a pubstomper in solo queue.

I actually played Leblanc into Riven not too long ago, if you want a free LB lane, it's also a good counter to learn.

Remlap12233 votes

Reason behind that? Riven has no sustain, and a LeBlanc lane is a kill lane. Plus LeBlanc is pretty broken kit-wise.

I get this, but a lot of people are missing the point to what i said. I said I hate that her cooldowns are so low for what she can bring to the table. I asked that her cooldowns be increased.

Spacefight0r24 votes

Riven has plenty of even matchups, she has counter matchups, she has matchups she counters. She can be invalidated by lane swaps, top lane jungle pressure, and mid roams. Just because you don't like how a champion functions conceptually does not mean that champion needs to be changed to fit your personal balance paradigm.

Absolutely, Riven's early game is weak and certain playstyles, champions, and items can be used against her. You just have to know what you're doing facing a Riven just like every other champion.

Kivolan11 votes

Riven's early game... Is weak?

You are aware that she is recognized as pretty much the creme de la creme of level 1-2 cheese kills, right?

Syn Zykan4 votes

Fiora I'm sorry, you do realize Fiora's level 2 cheese is far stronger right and she is able to sustain to maintain aggressive pressure thanks to her passive? Riven does better at level 3 when she has access to all 3 skills. But she literally has no way to sustain against poke damage, so if you poke her down during levels 1 and 2 she is going to lose a lot of her pressure (be willing to miss a couple cs, it is worth it to win lane overall). Riven is also going to push lane if she tries to fight in creeps AND she will draw their aggro if she tries to mix in her auto's. If riven wrecks you in top, it might be a good idea to change who you are taking up there or get used to working in team comps to shut her down.

Kivolan4 votes

Fiora is going to draw more aggro because the majority her damage comes from auto attacks. She also has zero CC. Riven doesn't need sustain, she has a manaless shield / dash on a short cooldown to get back behind her minion wave after she finishes comboing you with a stun / knock up.

Do you know what Fiora's secondary bar is? Mana. She can sustain all she wants early game with her health restoring passive, but she cannot infinitely engage upon you due to her mana restrictions... Which Riven lacks.

I usually top Cho vs Riven to at least not feed her, if not kill her. Just because someone thinks that she has a ridiculous kit doesn't mean that they're getting wrecked by them.

Fiora is also not virtually immune to ganks because of four dashes and an AoE stun.

Don't get me wrong, Fiora is definitely strong, but there are far worse offenders in the game... And Riven is one of them.

Narasimha4 votes

You are aware that if she doesn't win that early cheese, she's fucked? That she has a base health regen slightly higher than Mini Gnar's? That any champion she can't bully makes her cry tears of blood?

Keyoshi4 votes

any good riven main will know how to abuse her early game. Riven can 100-0 you at lvl 2. The only people that can beat her are people who can hold her down or out burst her. What i hate about her the most is what she brings to the table with really Low CD's.

MrPerson1021 votes

As someone who hates Riven equally as much, I still seem to have less of a problem with her than anyone else.

Her CDs have to be managed well to be up "constantly," and that's with 40%CDR for Chain Qs.

You should be able to navigate around her early lack of CDR and play around her Q stun.

TonguePunchBox3 votes

Q us a knock, not a stun. Meaning no tenacity against it. Also with her insane mobility and a stun to hold you for the knock (I play riven sometimes, shes broken) it isn't exactly easy to avoid her Q

I thought champions who had no resources were supposed to have high cool downs?

Auto-attacks are manaless with low cooldowns. Manaless champions tend to have abilities that feel more like auto-attacks than abilities.

Also - mana is generally an ammo system to keep front-loading 10 seconds of damage into 1 second in check.

Riven's QWER combo is actually R + W + E + Q + Q + Q + R, none of those abilities can be cast at the same time, and she probably wants to fit auto-attacks in there to make use of her passive.

Mana costs usually get bigger and bigger when you move further and further away from the AA AA AA AA AA AA style of play - LeBlanc and Veigar have high costs because they can front load 10 seconds of damage into an instant. Riven front-loads, like, 10 seconds of damage in 7 seconds. Or if you're super solid at animation canceling - you can do that with any champion's combo and auto-attacks themselves, leaving Riven proaportionally slower at unloading her combo to most you compare her to.

So - exact opposite. Manaless is supposed to mean ability spam, you just have to spam a lot of abilities to match the power a mana-using champion has.

You have like....a 3 second window to where she cant cast anything and thats it.

Again, she's a glorified auto-attacker. Champions like Tryndamere and Cait always have something nasty off cooldown.

Once she gets 40% cdr she's impossible to duel/chase or anything.

You can easily beat Riven in a duel with any champion that has any buisness trying to force a 1v1. Fighters and Assassins tend to be the only archetypes where there end-game involves forcing 1v1 duels though, most champions win by being awesome in a team fight. And Riven isn't that awesome in team-fights.

She's supposed to be a fighter but shes more of an assassin.

She's listed as a fighter/assassin, and she plays more like a fighter than most fighter/assassins. Riven is more about endurance than burst, where a fighter/assassin like Jax, Aatrox, Fiora, Yi, Xin, or Pantheon, etc. is going to bleed more into the assassin side than Riven.

I mean, I'd even give Vi better assassination potential than Riven.

Assassin is mostly burst, fighter sustained DPS in melee, and Riven is about as sustained DPS in melee as you can get without being limited to auto-attacking alone. I mean - at 200 AD Riven's Broken Wings is only going to do 210 damage, where anyone ever auto-attacking with 200 AD is going to do 200 damage. And maybe 500 damage with an IE crit on those autos.

lB2kGRlc8y12 votes

As much as I agree, I'd rather riot stopped making champions people explicitly want removed from the game. They've been getting increasingly flawed on release champions for a while now, to the point that older champs need complete kit rebuilds to compete, and those who had the kits to deal with them, get "compensation buffs" like viegar.

As far as resourceless champs go, they're not neccissarily supposed to have high cooldowns, but rather, the scope of their effects is generally lower than people who have mana - most of them are melee, have limited range on their effects (mostly melee) or other constraints on their abilities (fixed ranged dashes, little/no cc or range, utility). Gnar is sort of a weird exception in that he has range, and fairly good CC and utility, but he pays the price of reliability.

Riven is a fairly squishy champion who's only ranged ability is her ultimate. She functions a lot like a melee ADC, except her damage functions through spell casts rather than auto attacks like Tryndamere or Yasuo, and she prioritizes flat ad, CDR, and armor pen instead of attack speed and crit chance.

I'd say her cooldowns are just fine as they are - she has to be near you to do anything to you.

soliznoel3 votes

I main riven and nasus, so riven is like nasus(imo) in the sense you have to walk up to do damage, "wtf riven has 4 gap closers" she has 4 gap closers which she sacrifices damage to use and get close to somebody with. When you compare to other gap closers like zed, nidalee, lee sin, le blanc, they don't sacrifice much for their mobility,

For example, le blanc has her damage basiscally front loaded into W which she can cast twice, then zed who dosen't have much damage tied to his W technically. And i pretty sure all of riven's dashes equal that of a Lb or Kha zix jump. Also, nidalle can poke you down with spears and then her jump is increased when she hits one, she dosen't have to stay close to do a fuq ton of damage.

What im trying to say is riven needs to stay in melee range to use all her CC and damage. Last thing is she is pretty easy to gank, last season i mained jungle(riven jungle mostly) most rivens push up the lane like crazy, and always use their Q without freezing the lane, so it makes it easy to gank them if you just wait out her Q.

And i dont main riven because i think she's freelo, i play her because she's the most fun champion for me to play.

Thresh Outta Fux7 votes

It's really just the spammy mobility that gets to me. Movement and utility should have long cooldowns, targeted skills and cc should have medium cooldowns, and non-nuke non-cc non-utility skillshots should have shorter cooldowns.

kile1476 votes

One of my big issues with Riven is that she invalidates the entire idea of slows. At higher cdr she doesn't really need to walk anywhere, because she has 4 dashes in her kit that are almost always up. I remember it was Riven who convinced me to stop taking Malphite top because despite the fact that he is a tanky, armor building, champ with decent burst negation and trade she is still a pain to deal with because she had all the control about when to disengage and engage.

Thefriendlyorc2 votes

Even early game she removes the usefulness of slows, Red buff helps slow her down minimally but barely at all. In a low level fight when people dont even have ultimates, having effectively 3 flashes keeps her nice and safe.

Her burst is stupid.

Divewing5 votes

At the very least, I want to see Riven pay for terrible engages, the way she is now, she CAN blow almost everything (ie: everything but ult execute), then back off because shield-dash every 5 seconds. IF she has this kind of cc/tankiness/mobility/damage, don't let her get away with a botched engage on her end.

Thefriendlyorc4 votes

Yeah thats a valid concern, I've had games where I pick tanks to punish her and she laughs off my damage with her shield while outright winning the trade while I wasted mana. It feels unstoppable.

ZHt0vxuAlB5 votes

Leave her be m8.

cuddlykitten45 votes

I disagree with this. I don't find Riven to be that big of an issue. Just bait out her abilities. She's going to use them, so make her use them on your terms. The two highest sets of stacks I got on a Nasus was vs Rivens both times, and she counters him. She's totally able to be worked around. Just keep her busy doing something other than gaining cs.

Keyoshi3 votes

Easier said than done. When ever someone goes against a riven they always have a game plan on how to beat her/not die. Also even if you do bait out her abilities she still makes up the damage in auto's because of her passive of using the skills. If you don't jump in on that 3 second window then you're pretty much going to lose the lane because she'll have complete control and will be able to free farm.

PatMcGroyn5 votes

Riven can only play like assassin if you're a master at animation cancelling for her fast combo, when you build full damage (making it VERY tricky to teamfight), and when she either flashes on you or catches you facechecking. In other words, when you get assassinated by Riven, it's because you got outplayed. The fact of the matter is, she gets shit on in most lane matchups, needs a huge lead or a tanky build to teamfight effectively, and otherwise takes skillful split pushing and assassination gameplay to really take over a game in a meaningful way.

She really is not a problem, but what Riven does really well, through her mobility + hard cc + damage, is stomp on noobs with bad positioning and/ or game knowledge.

I don't agree with people who say "Smash the keyboard as Riven and gg". I don't find her like that at all, there is more to it than that. Thinking about your cd's and when your skills should be used to avoid ganks and secure kills. Just find out your opponents weakness and beat them. Whether it's a Riven or not. I disagree with another Riven nerf, I think there is other champions right now that can use it. Do you not agree fighting a Cho'Gath is worse than fighting a Riven? unless you love a 300 true dmg ult at level 1 that does indeed scale it's dmg.

Terff2 votes

Lol? Cho'Gath? You mean the guy who is slow as fuck and has easily predictable crowd control. If you want to use a scaling true damage ult as an example Darius' is far scarier.

mi ramfan3 votes

Riven's regular ability cooldowns are actually all about average for her role.

Q: 13 seconds at all ranks W: 11/10/9/8/7 E: 10/9/8/7/6 R: 110/80/50

Her only "short" cooldown compared to other bruisers is her ultimate, and that's at max rank.

Now, if you're complaining about 40% CDR Riven primarily...working as intended.
