How do ranked tiers work?

Real question, not upset, but I'm trying to understand:

I just got out of a ranked match with an enemy jungler "HG eRockWVU"- his team lost, but this guy was flaming about his team sucking. So, after the game I look him up on OP.GG, and this is where I got confused.

His stats: Currently 50LP GOLD IV, with only history is Plat Season 6, but his current ranked W/L ratio is 38%, with 18W and 29L. His ladder rank is 169,313 (15.88% top), with Solo MMR of 1508.

My stats are: Currently 53LP GOLD IV, with history Gold Season 4, 5, 6, current W/L ratio of** 54%**, with 74W and 64L. Ladder rank of 174,427 (16.36% top), Solo MMR of 1531.

My question is how is he the exact same rank and elo as me with that win/loss ratio? How is he HIGHER on the ranked ladder by nearly 5,000 people with his 38% WLR vs my 54% WLR? I feel like I would have been blasted into bronze with that WLR. With the season reset I had to start Silver 5. How did he climb or not decay with that win/loss ratio? Anybody know how this works? Thanks!

Well everyone says you drop 1 tier. Gold > Silver, Plat > Gold makes sense. Your 54% win ratio includes all of your silver climb? If you are better than silver, that will inflate your stats while you get easier wins until then.

His MMR is now lower than yours, so it probably reflects that he has been having a tough time recently. But we don't know what his team MMR was, what his original rank was (how many chances he had to lose before derank 1).

He was plat last season so was most likely placed at around gold 3-1 ish. He probably dropped a rank which is why his winrate is so low, or he's just been winning losing losing and just hasn't been demoted yet. If you continue to be above 50% you'll climb. Don't worry about him.

Atm he has more LP than you, so thats why he's higher. That's op.gg says anyways. Maybe you just lost a match or it hasn't updated on this site.

Win% doesn't matter if we just look at rank. I got a good winrate, but it doesn't mean I'm higher than a person with more LP than me.

He was a higher rank, he's falling and you're climbing. Maybe he did really good in his placements and got placed much higher than you. I was plat last season and I started at gold 1.

You get put in a rank that may be where you should be and then you smash your face against a brick wall of trolls/Scripter/feeders and just stupid team mates.

Gaining LP to almost geting out of ELO hell only to have 5 games filled with said trash on your team to knock you down so you can smash your face on the wall again.
