Is Riot Really Okay With How Akali is Right Now?

Now I'm gonna start by saying that I don't think Akali is overpowered. At all. She's in a decent spot strength-wise.

The problem, however, is that her playstyle is broken. She's far worse than she was before the update. The one factor that made old Akali not a monster was that her lane was so pathetic that she would easily be put 2-3 levels behind her opponent and 30-40 cs down. Akali snowballs harder than any champion in the game, that much is true of both old and new Akali. The difference is that old Akali could easily be shut down early to prevent her rampage before it could get started. Now Akali not only has a dash pre-6 (which also has invisibility tied to it, which has no counterplay), but she also got her inbuilt sustain frontloaded completely. Old Akali had natural spellvamp, but it was pitifully small early, so she would have to use a lot of spells and attacks to heal up, so it was easy to poke her out of lane. New Akali only has to get off a single auto attack to heal back a significant amount of health. This makes her lane much safer, while her post-6 power is still as terrifying as old Akali's.

New Akali still has the same weaknesses, which is why I wouldn't call her OP. She can still be locked down and bursted, she's still really weak to strong peel, and she's still a melee locked champ. However, new Akali is fundamentally flawed, as she is the hardest snowballing champ in the entire game, but she doesn't pay for that strength nearly as much as she used to. Akali is infamous for her 2 powerspikes; when she hits level 6, and when she finishes her Gunblade. Akali's powerspikes are insanely huge, which is why she snowballs so hard. If she goes even in lane, she can easily kill almost anyone the second she hits level 6. If she's behind, she farms for Gunblade and then still effortlessly kills anyone the second she can. Hextech Gunblade is such a perfect item for Akali that her getting just this one item is an equivalent spike to most champions getting their second or even third item.

So how would I go about fixing these issues? Well there's 2 ways. Either you decide that Akali is a pure blooded assassin, and you cut her sustain, and let her keep the jump on her shroud. Or, you decide that Akali is a skirmisher, and you play up her DPS and sustain, and remove the jump on her shroud. Letting Akali keep both her insane sustain and her shroud jump is a mistake. It gives a champ whose weakness is supposed to be a bad lane too many tools to keep up in lane. I firmly believe that any champ that scales as well as Akali does should pay for that strength with a really weak early game. That isn't always the case (Gangplank), but that's how it SHOULD be. Right now against Akali, you have to push her out of lane consistently and get a huge lead, or she will kill you at 6, easily. But that's pretty hard for a lot of champs, as Akali can sustain through poke, and run from engages with her shroud. It's too hard to punish her when that's your only safety net for when she gets a murder-boner for you and decides to kill you. Also, Gunblade is far too big of a spike for her. Akali with just Gunblade easily slaughters most mages who have 2 items complete, even if one of them is a defensive item like Banshee's. It gives her even stronger sustain, so that you can not push her out anymore, and the active range is just bigger than her jump range, so if she gets even just barely close enough, you die.

"Her post-6 power is still as terrifying as old Akali's" Right, that's why they made her ult deal 50 base damage instead of 150 like before and have a 1 second inbuilt cooldown between casts, right? The updated Akali was the weakest of the assassin updates, and I don't remember if she got a buff or not after the fact.

Also note that Riot did say that Akali's update was a bandage update until they had time to get a full VGU developed for her, which will probably take a couple of months to do.

She always had a cooldown between casts of her ultimate. In fact it was always more than 2 seconds. Also, she got that damage back in her passive, the second hit CHUNKS. Not to mention that they massively buffed Gunblade active damage.

That's true. It's only her rank 2 and rank 3 ultimate re-cast cooldown that got increased. Before the update it was 2s/1.5s/1s. After the update, it is 2s at all ranks.

The damage nerf on her ultimate is not made back on her passive. The passive only makes up for the damage of her previous passive. Her previous passive had bonus magic damage on all of her autos, not just one every x seconds. So compared to her old passive, the damaging aspect is complete garbage.

The new passive is more burst. Gunblade>R>AA>Q>AA>E is so much burst, where it used to take a few rotations to kill. They frontloaded Akali's damage and healing, which is contrary to what most players liked about her in the first place. I loved old Akali, it was really fun to actually have to outplay to kill your opponent, at least until you had Gunblade and maybe a Sheen. Now you just do the same combo and instakill your opponent with a point and click rotation. If she didn't fall off so hard she'd be one of the most hated champs by far, I guarantee it.

Before and after Akali still uses point-and-click rotations. Just the former requires more rotations. Personally I find the new passive not fitting, the old passive was much fitting for a hypercarry and had counterplay since it takes time for the passive to ramp up it's effect, giving time for opponents to fight Akali back.

Yes you are right that it is more burst in the sense the damage is compressed to one auto attack, but it is on the second autoattack which usually does not flow with her Q-AA combo, given the passive is on a static cooldown and has a standalone trigger than the old passive.

More rotations=more time to get away and more opportunity to outplay. I miss old Akali, she was more of a skirmisher than an assassin, which I liked.

This man, this.

They just switched her around, made her good early and mid game as opposed to mid and late game. Which really sucks cause I played her cause I liked zooming around teamfights.

Most Akali mains hate the update, she went from a hybrid Skirmisher/Assassin to a pure assassin, which alienated half of her old playerbase. If I want to play a melee AP assassin, I'll play Fizz or Diana, give me back my old Akali. :(

Sad thing is she's less of a true assassin than she used to be. She's in a weird spot where she's an assassin who builds as bruiserish as possible. Really sucks.

The point is the bandaid made her even worse. It made the already toxic aspects of her kit even more toxic.

Actually,

She already had a 1 second inbuilt cooldown between casts,

Now she has a TWO swcond inbuilt cooldown between casts. And her ult also only scales with 35% AP as opposed to the previous 50%

playing vs akali is so fucking unbearable in lane as u get shit on after 6 but you KNOW shes going to get shit on late game if u keep on eye out for her.

shes a weaker version of renekton in that she ACTUALLY falls off late game and isnt tanky when she jumps into 5 people.

Limrick1 votes

Exactly, she isn't OP because she falls off a cliff, but laning her is stupid, she just sustains through everything and kills you at 6.

Not to mention that all of her damage is point and click.

Monotachi1 votes

The assassin update was simply there to keep Akali in-line and give your something until her VGU comes. So the update wasn't there to solve her existing issues, just a bandaid. Her shroud has been made more frustrating, since there are no pink wards, so there is no easy-accessable counterplay to her stealth anymore. Shroud was made useless for so long because 8s stealth is not 'short'. It's funny that sometimes all the Akali has to do is wait in the shroud, and 8s is long enough for her team to save her.

Akali mains didn't want a blink on her shroud. A champion that already has 3-point-and-click dashes, which is the reason why players complain about her - so who thought adding another mobility spell would be such a great idea...The blink just severely limits the shroud placement ability of this skill, something that gave Akali depth and skill to use. It's also the reason why Akali mainly goes top lane now after the update, before the update - it was a balanced mix of top and mid Akali's. Being able to enter into the shroud circle from the edge is so vital against ranged opponents. It completely destroyed the zoning aspect of the shroud.

Exactly what I'm saying, the update made her problems worse. She went from one of the weakest laners to a champ that can even bully certain matchups, and still turns into a monster later. It fixed nothing and made new problems.

New Akali is just a top lane bully.

Akali is SO HOT1 votes

Old Akali was better and more fun to play, especially her shroud not being a generic mobility spell.

I agree.
