My problem with Crit

Why is one of the most powerful offensive stats in the game still RNG based?

Remember dodge? Pre reworked Sion and fiddle passive? You remember how Riot got rid of that because they didn’t want RNG like that in the game? Why is Crit still RNG?

Now this isn’t a post complaining about ADC’s or their strength, this also isn’t me saying Crit is broken, for example Jhin fourth auto and Ashe passive work with Crit in ways I think are healthier to the game. But the RNG needs to stop. A trade shouldn’t be determined by weather or not someone like Tryndamere, Caitlyn or Xayah get a lucky Crit.

I present you with this idea. Maybe replace it with %bonus damage on auto attacks this would work in tandem with abilities that can Crit as well. This would still have a 100% bonus damage cap (similar to Attack speeds 2.50 cap)

It’d need some tweaking but adapting champion kits and items to work with this could work too. So item 3087 item 3094 item 3085 item 3046 would just grant 30% bonus damage on autos/ Crit abilities item 3508 would grant 20% item 3031 would grant 20% with a passive that brings the cap to 150% bonus damage cap.

Champion examples include Fiora: bladework’s second auto deals 40/55/70/85/100% bonus auto damage Jhin: %bonus auto damage scales by 50% (passive). Fourth shot deals %100 bonus auto attack damage (passive) ultimate fourth shot deals 100% bonus auto damage. Ashe: %bonus auto damage grants stronger slows but scales only 10% as effectively (passive) Yasuo: Steel tempest scales with %bonus Crit at 75% efficiency. Yasuo gains %bonus auto damage at 190% efficiency. Same can be applied to Shaco Tryndamere Talon and Pantheon

It's not a bad idea and that's been brought up before but ultimately that wouldn't actually fix the problem. It's important to note that crit is also not as random as say dodge chance used to be. Each hit that you do not crit boosts your next chance to land one.

But even then that only boosts the chance, nothing is guaranteed. I remember that post a couple of years back from riot explaining Crit, but at the end of the day that was nothing but an excuse. There’s still a chance you Crit 4 times in a row with 10% Crit chance or don’t Crit at all with 90%. Yes the chance is small, but the fact that it’s there doesn’t make since as an excuse from Riot to say every time you don’t Crit your less likely to Crit the next time will be less likely.

It’s akin to saying if you flip a coin and you land heads your more likely to land tails next flip. While true it’s still random,

But even then let’s forget the RNG and look at the idea I proposed. Say your top lane, you trade auto for auto with Tryndamere vs Renekton. Let’s say the gator has more AD. If Tryn Crit she wins the trade if he doesn’t Renekton wins. But that’s Random. If he did more damage on auto attacks as a permanent stat with his passive, he could gauge his damage depending on his Auto’s alone.

Your coin analogy is a little off -- if we are planning on currently using that analogy (tails crit heads don't). If you land a head, you'd have to land two heads in a row to then mean your second attack wouldn't crit and the third coin flip would automatically be a tail.

The issue I have is that it doesn't work in reverse -- let's say you crit on your first auto with 50% chance. Your next hit should be a 0% chance unless you've gone past the 5 second reset time. It shouldn't be 50% followed by 50% following by another 50% (assuming all hits crit).

not quite actually going with that 50% crit analogy

the first his you have a 1/2 chance of criting. that we agree on, but lets say you crit, there isn't a 0% chance of critting again, but a 25% chance since 1/2(Chance to crit) x 1/2(chance to crit) equals 1/4 (chance of critting twice.

So in those two auto's there's a 1/2 chance you crit once and miss once a 1/4 chance you crit twice a 1/4 chance you don't crit twice.

Riot's system forces these odds, but it's still possible. So yes hitting a crit with 50% crit chance won't cause the next crit to be 50% again, but it wouldn't be 0 either, it'd be 25%, which is still RNG. And that's the issue i have with it. It's not as random as dodge sure, but it's still random, and on an incredibly powerful offensive stat.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to convey and I think we are mostly saying the same thing but let me try to clarify -- from League wikia's:

"Critical strike chance will adjust dynamically based on the number of basic attack that didn't critically strike. At 30% critical strike chance you're sure to have 30 or more attacks critical strike per 100 attacks. If you didn't critical strike for a long time your next attacks will have a higher chance."

What bugs me is that this doesn't work the other way. So yes for example using the 50% chance the chance that 3 autos crit right now is (1/2) x (1/2) x (1/2) = (1/8) or 12.5%. What I'm suggesting is that it works like when you don't critically strike. Meaning your crit chance actually goes DOWN if your previous hit did. So someone with a 50% chance would be able to crit strike on the first hit at 1/2 chance but the second hit would be adjusted down by 50% to only give it a 0% chance to crit strike (and then the third hit would go back to 50%).

There would still be some RNG in this but far less and you could still keep the crit chance mechanic without someone with low crit chance gettng three crits against you in a row.

Give it another example with 80% crit chance which a lot of ADCS currently build

  1. 1st hit has a 80% chance to crit and does
  2. 2nd hit has a (80% - 20%) = 60% chance to crit and does
  3. 3rd hit has a (60% - 20%) = 40% chance to hit and does etc... at some point you reach 0% regardless of how much crit you have unless you're at 100%

Ohhhhhhhh. I think I get it now, so you're saying that because your more likely to crit after missing a bunch, but the fact that you aren't less likely to crit after missing a bunch in the same way is unjustified. I think I get it. I'd still rather have Crit be replaced overall, this is just getting confusing at this point. But I think I at least understand your point. Thanks for the actual discussion.
