I'm Confused About How A Part of the Queue System

So when you're in your promotional series, you get "Autofill Protected", which guarantees one of your preferred roles.

And in the 2017 ranked update, it says, "The major differences from 2015 are that you'll be able to select two preferred positions and exclude your least favorite."

But doesn't the queue system already guarantee one of your two selected roles? I've literally never been given a role that wasn't the role I queued up for throughout the entire year.

In Diamond+ dynamic queue (season 6) you could have something called "Autofill" which means that it adds fill onto your selected roles.

For instance, I usually queue up for Top/Mid. If autofill was active, it's as if I queued up for Top/Mid/Fill, and I'd often get support.

The idea behind the 2017 ranked update change is that, you can queue for say Top/Fill/(Not support). I would love to do this because I'm garbage at mostly anything that's not a carry, and top is my main role. It's as if I'd be queueing up for Top/Mid+Jungle+Bot.

The "Autofill Protected" is there to make sure you have a chance to carry yourself through promo series. It wouldn't be fair if I got autofilled to support during my series, because I have no idea how to win as support and it puts me at a disadvantage.

The reason you haven't been given a role that you haven't queued up for is because of your MMR (Match-Making Rating - how it chooses who you play with and against). There are a lot of players with similar MMR as yours, so the queue times are relatively short. But around my MMR, there aren't as many, so if they didn't autofill people to support (the least wanted role), queue times would be very long for anyone not queueing as Fill or Support.
