League has NEVER been super friendly to new players. When I was a wee lad I was building item 3010 on lane Nocturne in Twisted Treeline because Season 1 recommended items were special. But this Meta. This Meta takes all the cakes and defecates on them. This Meta will eat new players for breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper.

Let us assume Riot sifts out the smurfs and new players get to level 30+ in the first place.

Recipe for frustration

With the current Meta any new player put in a game, even slightly tilted against them will inevitably;

  1. Make a mistake, then get utterly destroyed early in lane.
  2. Not understand why they got utterly destroyed.
  3. Get flamed by team mates because they got utterly destroyed.
  4. Returning to lane and get destroyed even harder.
  5. Not have time to understand or react to team fights.
  6. Get blamed for the inevitable loss.
  7. Quit or requeue and return to step one.

What new players need. New players need time to make mistakes and correct them. They opportunities to come back. They need to be able to survive tough lanes. They need close games and understandable victory conditions. They need time to see what is going on in a team fight. Fast paced, snowbally, high damage Meta game with low time to react or process is the wrong time to be fishing for new players.

That is why some smurfs are good. Even if they destroy a person, they can help teach the newer people about things like itemization, what their skills do, what does the smurfs skills do, how the enemy can work together, etc.

Not many do that because theres too many assholes that want to flame and rage and complain that the new players arnt playing like they are diamond and they want to make it so that the new players leave because they are purposefully trying to ruin the game.....

But there is some good smurfs out there.

If players wanted to learn these things there is an abundance of information available on the internet you don't need a hard-stuck plat, or lower, smurf telling you what items to buy when there are plenty of diamond+ guides and that can tell you what to build, and how to play your champion.

If you're new, and just following a higher level player's calls in game doesn't mean that they understand why they did it, or anything else of that nature. They're too busy trying to learn the basics. What the player is telling you mid-game you will hardly be able to follow unless they are spending more time typing than playing the game.

Some will try to help people, but it's hard to say if it's really that helpful depending on how new the person is.

Something i tend to do on my smurf is i do chat quite a bit when someone is wanting to learn. Bot games or normals, i do tend to try and help in both.

Often times i might utilize either Discord or their in game voice chat function and talk to them while playing and explain some things. Once some of the stuff is explained, the basics make sense as long as you dont overload them.

For example, suggesting working on farming more than trying to kill. Explaining that just because you are not getting a ton of kills, that does not mean you are not playing well. That most of the people being assholes are usually just smurfs that cant cut it at their main elo, and so to just mute them because they are not worth listening to and that they should just be reported.

When i smurf it is not to have a stick sizing contest, it is to help new players out. I target other smurfs and usually play less aggressive champs like Nidalee who has nearly no wave clear outside of her cougar W and E which is really punishable.

The enemy newbie will learn to dodge, they will focus on wave clear because i am not close enough for them to try anything, and they learn that if they get low they need to back.

If done right, it has many benefits including showing the newbies that not all higher ranked players are assholes.
