How the heck did I go from G5 to S5 in placements when I won half of them?

New placements place you approximately three divisions below your expected league position given your MMR.
You were probably a low MMR G5 player -- you won't get demoted out of gold if your MMR is S2 ish -- and went even on your placements, resulting in the system underrating your S2 MMR by three divisions to make you start at S5.
Hold on, does this mean if I was paired against Gold/Plat players last season with only a Silver ranking, I'll probably be placed higher because of MMR?
That would be nice. Oh so nice.
