The Ryze Update Sucks
There are things I like about the update. Most of which aren't very important. The rest I find awful... I'll start with the good though.
Good Stuff
- You can build stacks on Tear without enemies nearby, yay!
- You can actually almost poke people from a real distance. Not very far, not very hard, but eh at least it's cheap mana wise and low cd.
- The MR shred on his E is %, yay!
- The ability icons are nice.
- ????
Bad Stuff
- The sounds and visuals are meh at best. Worst of all is the hum from his passive's shield, it's really annoying. The E's initial visual is too big and it's near impossible to see the bounces on low settings.
- The gameplay of his passive is 100000% clunkier now. Trying to both CS and prepare for and then execute a fight (or even just a quick trade in lane) is a NIGHTMARE. It's like when you're Annie and you really wanna hold your stun but you also wanna Q the cannon minion or W the whole wave to push, EXCEPT WAY WORSE. The reward for holding your passive is meh and you can easily mess it all up with a failed Q (which they can so easily avoid with minions), and any attempt at getting use out of the cdr part of your passive is annihilated by almost any CC AND is super obvious. They can see your stacks, they can tell you're just Qing to get stacks. They can play around it all by just waiting at a slightly safe spot while they CS. The ability for your stacks to expire over time is so awful in so many ways. In lane it's basically crap. In team fights it's like trying to manage Gnar's passive, except harder, and with less payoff.
- If you don't get a lot of benefit from the shield or cdr parts of his passive he's a LOT weaker than he was.
- The big CDR being on his R instead of his Q makes him even MORE late game good, early game terribad. I'd really like to feel like more than a punching bag for the first 5 levels. Seriously. This applies to the change to his mana regen too.
- The mana = bonus AP aspect of his passive is still BAD for gameplay. Either it's worth building super greedy in this regard and so you need a rune page and mastery page that only 1 (maybe 2) champions in the game want or it isn't and it's just a little extra free AP. If it is good it once again makes him awful early, powerful late, EVEN MORE. And means he secretly costs WAY more IP to play than any champion should... I get that it lets him gain AP from defensive items. Not worth.
- He still yells "come on" at you in an annoyed voice. :p
- He still loses to the same stuff, and he wins or loses even harder than before.
What exactly did this update solve? His outdated spell icons? His inability to hit people in stealth? All the beautiful elegance of ordering his spells based on the situation gone so that now we can count to 5 and shrug at the results? Even if the CDR aspect of his passive's proc is more powerful than what he had before, is it actually more fun? It sure isn't to me. We traded smooth gameplay for awkward burst at best. :(
I suggest giving him back his old form of abilities reducing each others CD but require that his Q has to hit a target for it to do it (maybe with a different reduction amount for balance reasons).
I'll freely admit I haven't played him much since the update. The problem is I don't WANT to play him now since the update, it's just not fun. I used to avoid playing him in serious games because at low mmr late game champs are awful and he's not good in this meta. Now I'm not sure I'll ever play him again.
and
very good items on him. With a 9 0 21 masteries he is nearly at 500 of MS with the Aclarity enhancent, the other items that I build are some others considered "core"
