Fill but not X role

GigglesO··50 votes·1,846 views

So I understand it doesn't reduce queue time, but I really hate jungling... Can we relook at this feature. I feel like it could have a nice QoL for players that just don't want to play one role but like rotating between the other 4.

ITT: "This is stupid because everyone picked 'Fill except Support'!!!11"

To answer that: Allow us to choose one non-support role to not be filled into. Problem solved.

I'd be on-board with this.

I member too. You really couldn't count on getting a preferred role, and had to be able to play every role at least somewhat competently.

Frankly, anyone claiming that ELO should exclusively be represented by their best roles, are being super entitled. (It also means that you lack understanding of those roles, and their match ups. Which makes it harder to synergize with your team.)

Bârd4 votes

They tested this.

In testing, queue times were hell because nobody would play support, and that created a bottleneck.

Makior723 votes

I like this idea, but would bet money on it that riot will never ever do this.

EndlessSorcerer20 votes

They attempted it in one region.

Apparently, the vast majority excluded support (which defeats the point of implementing autofill).

GigglesO5 votes

Honestly if someone doesn't want to play support so badly they will probably just troll if they get auto filled, or even just dodge. If you really don't want to play that one role you probably wont do well in it either.

EndlessSorcerer4 votes

Trust me, I've run into plenty of this.

One of them happened to be a Syndra support who built Doran's Ring -> Rabadon's Deathcap while feeding.

The community kinda sucks.

GigglesO5 votes

Thank you for emphasizing my point. If someone doesn't want to play support they don't want to play support. In my case it is jungle. I really hate that role. PvE is super boring to me, and if I don't get good ganks going I have no real gold income in comparison to the enemy jungler if he does get good ganks off.

SithesisLord3 votes

If someone doesn't want to play support they don't want to play support.

Well this is a team game.

And what people don´t want or actually want in a team game rarely matters.

People HAVE to Autofill every now and then. Which means they HAVE to learn support and MUST have at least two supports, or whatever it is the role they don´t like.

Heck, i don´t like Autofill anymore than anyone else does, but that doesn´t mean i won´t play it. I have Leona and Sona and regardless of support meta, those two are the ones i go for.

Jungle? Hecarim, Vi and WW. ADC? MF.

Riot's failure in having success with 'Role Selection Minus The One Nobody Likes And Will Not Play Because They´re Goddamn Children' means that basically until Autofill is removed, we will all have to either accept it, or stick to ARAMs and RGM queues.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

We all do our part to help out with queue times, if that means playing support every once in a while then it's not that big of a deal.

The kinds of people who troll when they get autofilled are probably also likely to exhibit other deplorable behaviors.

It's not Riot's job to cater to babies. If a player is immature enough to troll their teammates and ruin the game for them I'm pretty sure that team doesn't want them in this community anyways.

tldr; Players like that? Fuck 'em. We don't need them.

GigglesO1 votes

Just had an adc main get auto filled support, left lane level 1... ohhhh yea I knew I wanted a 2v1 lane. Sometimes I already wait 6 minutes for a game. I would personally love to wait longer rater than have that shit happen.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Players like that person should be removed from the community so that they cannot ruin your game like that ever again.

We shouldn't cater to their wishes, because that only reinforces that they can throw tantrums when they don't get what they want.

Well no duh. Who honestly thinks that's not what will immediately happen?

CP Wukong2 votes

Why does autofill matter? It's not like he's saying to remove autofill, just pick 4 roles instead of 2, and if you get really unlucky you can still get autofilled.

EndlessSorcerer2 votes

Autofill was introduce primarily because not enough players were willing to play support.

If they were offered the option to select four roles instead of two, chances are that the majority of players would select everything except for support.

There isn't really any benefit in doing so.

LightIsMyPath1 votes

..? You can still be autofilled so I don't see how that could be a bad change? There is a benefit for all the people who would queue as all but not top/jungle /mid/adc and zero change to the ones queueing for all but not support so I 'd say the result is still positive

japhib2 votes

I think the idea OP is suggesting is a bit different -- keep Autofill, but if you don't care what your primary/secondary roles are, you can do "fill but not support" or "fill but not jungle" and you'll get a good variety excluding the role you don't want to play. You'll still get a good variety of roles in your games without having to play support in 70% of your games.

At least I think that would be a better idea.

Dominick Destine3 votes

That would be dumb as fud.

Obviously most people would say "fill but not support" thereby defeating the point.

GigglesO4 votes

So what is the difference of players doing "no support" vs just picking everything except fill and support to avoid the role? The feature could also still have auto fill trigger and force players to support once in awhile if there is a case of abuse.

Just because players don't want support doesn't mean that the feature wouldn't be useful or nice to have.

Dominick Destine3 votes

Actually that's exactly what it means...

GigglesO4 votes

Out of my friends that I regularly play with I have: 1 friend that never wants to adc. Another that can't mid. A third that can't top. I hate jungle.

You can't say that the feature would be useless just because a majority of people would chose to not support. Support has always been an unpopular role, at least since the healing meta was nerfed. That meta we had in S1 that noone talks about... 4 second soraka heal that did 120 before ap... you know...

Dominick Destine3 votes

Yes I can, because that's exactly what would happen. That feature would be useless in anything other than completely breaking the game.

Your entire argument is "Well, this feature would completely break the system BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT WOULDN'T BE GOOD", then again it could be that you don't understand how the system works, I'm not sure....

CP Wukong2 votes

Everyone that got me as ADC in ranked would strongly disagree with those saying this feature would be useless.

And I don't see how it would be different from picking 2 roles, as it is just a "pick 4 roles" instead. It's not like you can't get autofilled at all anymore with it, it just treats you as if you picked every role except one. You still gotta bite the bullet sometimes and play support/ADC/jungle/whatever.

GigglesO1 votes

bwahahah right? I have a a few friends I play with and its literally auto loss if they get stuck in a role they can't play. I always end up filling for them, and they fill for me if I get jungle.

Protoform X2 votes

I would play 80% of my games in Fill NOT Jungle. The other 20%? ARAM and Featured.

koshkyra2 votes

I would exclude top

The entire reason i dont play top is because of all the Riven Darius Fiora Gangplank tryhards there

Heriba2 votes

Remember team builder? and the hour long queue waiting for a support? yea that totally dont happen again now cause you say so

LightIsMyPath1 votes

?? Autofill would still stay but if more people are queueing with support included just to constantly avoid something else it would happen fewer times. I feel like 100% of the people against this idea didn't understand what op meant

GigglesO1 votes

so easy solution, make fill but not X role make it so you can still get autofilled if needed. Dun Dun Dun

All it would do is make you less likely to get into that role unless you do get hit with an auto fill game. Even better if you get hit with auto fill and then do fill but not x role make it so that role is completely locked out while you are "fill protected"

notice me Sin pi1 votes

rito already tried it n everyone just opted to remove support role. Only way it could work is if it does not exempt players from autofill to support, in which case it's basically meaningless to have the feature.

LightIsMyPath2 votes

It's not dumb it would reduce the number of needed autofills since there would be more people including support in their queue.

notice me Sin pi1 votes

definitely true, but if more than 50% of people want to exclude support role, then it's useless feature according to RitoLogic™

Gentleman Jey1 votes

Probably will never happen. Unless all roles are EXACTLY equal in popularity. Otherwise, the least popular role will slow the queue. Since it is the least popular it will also be the most (All roles but this one) rejected. Meaning that there will be fewer people able to fill that role. Thus, will increase queue time. I prefer to be auto-filled into a role, than to wait literally an hour for the method that we had previously. (I don't remember the name.)

The larger the difference between least and most popular the larger the queue time.

Gentleman Jey1 votes

As for what to do about auto-fill trolls? Decrease the ban stringency for auto-fills that are reported.

iamthegoatofwar1 votes

I'd rather just remove this stupid fucking auto fill. Maybe it can stay in normal draft but it's disgusting they've kept it in ranked. I shouldn't have to worry about losing elo cause I'm not playing something I'm comfortable with.

powerbats1 votes

As a support main i'm auto fill protected so here's a suggestion or 2. Why not learn how to be a good support then pick your preferred role then support 2nd. The other option is to have a least desired role as the 3rd option for picks as in I absolutely suck at this position.

LightIsMyPath2 votes

I regularly queue mid/support and I get autofilled jungle and ADC way more than I'd like.. Once I even got filled top , trust me my team didn't like the 3/0/4 renekton and the 4/0/3 Elise when they showed up botlane with the counter tp of a 0/7 malphite . I'd LOVE to have a"not top!!" Feature

I think you have to have it say auto fill protected 1st for that to work though. Although at least you didn't get back to back nights of ppl on someone else's account in ranked feeding like a champ. One admitted it 1 didn't but it was pretty obvious.

Kloqdq1 votes

Good chance someone will swap with you if you asked...? I mean there is 4 other people in that queue, you may as well as if anyone wants to swap roles. Otherwise learn to play the role and live with it, as you should, or dodge.

GigglesO1 votes

The toxicity in this statement is unreal. I'm a S1 vet, and I've never liked jungle (except for a brief time in S3 where I mained twtich in jungle). The whole reason why the current system was created was to avoid the "fuck you learn to play all roles", so what makes you think you have the right to say "learn to play the role and live with it, as you should, or dodge". If that is honestly what riot wanted we wouldn't have the new system.

Kloqdq1 votes

How is my statement toxic....?

I don't enjoy support, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't learn how to play the role, especially in a ranked setting in the unlikely chance I may have to play it. Hell people make it seem like they get autofilled every single game. It happens like once in a blue moon. If you do get autofilled, there is a good chance someone on your team may just be willing to swap with you. People ask to swap with me all the time and I'll happily swap. Communication is the first part of the puzzles.

If that doesn't work then you should have at least prepared for the time you may have to jungle. Even if you hate the ever living hell out of it. Even if you are NA's worse jungler, you should not go into ranked, a setting that is designed to test each player's skills and their abilities to work with a team, and not at least have the ability to jungle for one game. If you are not willing to, then you should frankly dodge. I do it sometimes on that off chance I get autofilled and don't want to be X role.

The current system works much better than the old one. The old system was, who got higher up in picks and who had the faster computer. This led to all the bullshit that was old queue. The new one is a lot fairer. You are almost always likely to get your role and not have to worry about it. The autofill is there to try and get people into game faster. It does suck but it's not the worse thing out there. You and the people you are now calling a team need to either work thru it or you need to be prepared to do it. Everyone is under the same rules and it should be expected that everyone can at least play a role if they are required too.

That is just fair in my mind.

GigglesO1 votes

You missed the entire point of the first post. This isn't about getting auto filled, or stopping auto fill from happening. Its about being able to pick 4 roles at the same time with equal preference. Hell, I even think pick three would be nice.

Kloqdq1 votes

It just comes back to my point. As a player you will very likely need to play a role you dislike at some point. It happens and it sucks but it will happen. By selecting 3-4 roles, you start killing off roles that people aren't as interested in, basically what happened during testing. Sure you as a single player may pick of jungle but then you'll get tons of people picking support or jungle as well, leaving those players in high demand and making queues terrible. Teambuilder already showed us what happens when you need to wait on a high in demand role. You can wait sometimes so long you forget you are in queue. I think the current system is completely fair as is and if we start working out ways that exclude roles (picking 4 roles out of 5 is basically that) then you get into 5+ minute queue times which NO one wants.

GigglesO1 votes

I don't think you understand, team builder forced you to pick one role. I'm not saying remove auto fill. I'm not saying that you won't occasionally get auto filled, my point is that if we are intent on having roles selected we should have the option to exclude 1 role except in the cases of auto fill.

Just because players would still need to occasionally get auto filled does not mean that we shouldn't be able to pick 3 or 4 roles and let the system have an easier time placing players that don't want to play a specific role, but still want to fill into the other 3-4.

I get alot of games where I pick say mid/bot and someone asks me to trade for top because they got auto-filled, had I been allowed to pick 3-4 roles he would have not had to ask to get that role, I could have automatically filled into top with possibly even a shorter queue time.

Kloqdq1 votes

Honestly, I don't think it would work the way you are thinking it would. First impressions is you are basically just picking fill expect you exclude one role which they already tested and failed.

I know. You pick 3-4 roles and then X player will get that. But then you have to question why X player didn't just pick fill if they really didn't care what role they got?

GigglesO1 votes

{quoted}

But then you have to question why X player didn't just pick fill if they really didn't care what role they got?

BECAUSE THEY DO CARE THAT THEY DON"T GET ROLE #5. How dense are you to not understand that concept?

Kloqdq1 votes

And I already said, it was tested. It failed. People would VASTLY exclude one role which affected queue health. Yes, people would pick 3-4 roles but this leads to a large number of players picking everything BUT support or jungle or top. At the end of the day you'll find more games where 7 out of 10 players will not pick X role and then you will need to find those 3 out of 10 players to fill in. Expect put that on a massive scale with lower odds. The least popular role at the time would just become the most excluded role of that time and you cause issues.

It would also probably lead to less satisfaction for players that only play one or two role. Unless you allow people to only pick 2 roles and not the full 3-4 then you'll have a lot of people flip-flopping around roles because the system will just need to put you somewhere.

GigglesO1 votes

If failed to reduce queue time. It didn't fail at giving players what they want... Again, this doesn't mean that you shouldn't get auto filled occasionally or give fill protection.

Also how would being able (not forced) to pick 3-4 roles make people that pick 2 roles less happy? The two have no correlation. They can still pick just their two roles...
