"we're buffing yasuo because he has a large playerbase"

GigglesO··161 votes·21,244 views

You know this is they type of attitude that unbalances your game and keeps trash tier champions trash. Maybe if you cared about all champions more equally then we wouldn't have this balance fiasco.

Edit: With an official rioter response I thought I would compile some data from Champion.gg to compare and contrast with what was said by this Rioter. Specifically in response to this.

"No we are not buffing Yasuo because he's popular/has a large player base. We are buffing him because he has the highest average games played per player out of EVERY champion in League, and even with the largest number of players who HAVE mastered him, he's struggling to win the "promised" number of games based on what you would expect from a mastery curve"

So I complied a few champions curves and compared them to yasuo. Yasuo Mid and top https://imgur.com/h7N4UoX

Gagas all roles https://imgur.com/R22b7hC

Corki Mid/ADC https://imgur.com/FYNhunJ

Chogath Top/Jungle https://imgur.com/lpWCBMS

A-Sol Mid https://imgur.com/nWdS30t

So maybe I'm confused why we don't have A-Sol Nerfs, why we have Yasuo Buffs why champs like gragas and corki and cho aren't getting buffs (lol cho buffs).

Maybe it would help if you gave us some EXTRA data. Things like champion.gg Still show us things like this. Where yasuo still has an extremely high winrate for his mains, despite his current overall winrate.

https://imgur.com/7rkZqzo

Everything came from champion.gg

Maybe you could give us what the winrate of players that master a champion should have? Without data to back up your reasoning when Riot says things like this it will always sound like you are just looking for any excuse to buff a champion. Is this data from champion.gg even correct?

You could also answer things like: Has every-most players that have mastered yasuo fallen below the "promised threshold"? What is the "promised threshold" for mastering a champion? Why don't we use he same argument to buff champs like volibear?

Without this type of data its pretty easy to misconstrue anything that you say as being biased in any thread that you make. Which is exactly why you get so many threads exactly like this one. It honestly sounds like Riot is biased, because back in S1-3 when olaf, eve, and etc.. was this popular riot just nerfed them, and let them sit at low winrate for years. Which again is why it makes Riot sound biased with statements like the aforementioned.

Edit 2: This isn't even about yasuo buffs, I don't think that it is inapropriate to buff a champion that is below 50% winrate. I however hate the fact that it sounds like Riot only does something because he has such a large playerbase. A lot of champions could gain a large player base if they had relatively self sufficient kits. Yasuo/Lee Sin and other popular champions have historically been very self sufficient so if played properly they appear to have very few weaknesses. Where other champions weaknesses are more pronounced.

Edit 3: So before riot tries to bury this thread anymore about not buffing champions for popularity. I'd like to remind the community about a rabbit hole that Riot jumped down years ago...

https://imgur.com/4jfzIfM "https://twitter.com/RiotMorello/status/484042166948212736"

Please do keep turning up the volume, we have some people in the back that are hard of hearing, or just not ignorant to the fact that popular champions get touched up more frequently. Which could be easily seen by looking through patch notes, and compiling the raw number of changes each champion has received since their original release, or lack there of in the cases of champions that were over preforming and were not nerfed when they needed them. They owe us the data on why they are buffing champions and nerfing champions. Otherwise its just biased garbage. Without data there is no balance.

I typically don't engage in these sorts of threads, but think this is a perfect opportunity to outline why it can be rough to attempt to engage in topics on the boards. I saw the thread crop up about Yasuo last week, and deemed it a good opportunity to engage even briefly into why we would even consider buffing him, knowing full well that he's a fairly contentious champion. A lot of players gave some really good thoughts, some were rather typical vitriol, and some were just misinformed. I personally don't have the time to address every question that came up in the thead (which feels really bad), but still thought it was valuable to provide even just a small window of insight into why we may or may not make a change to the game - in this case deciding to buff Yasuo.

What's a major pain in the ass is to check the boards over the weekend and see that a thread near the top that took my replies completely out of context, spreads a false narrative, and only serves to turn more people against Riot (or the balance team in this case). I want to provide context on our work when I can, but having my words twisted into a message that's blatantly false makes me wonder sometimes if it is worth it. No we are not buffing Yasuo because he's popular/has a large player base. We are buffing him because he has the highest average games played per player out of EVERY champion in League, and even with the largest number of players who HAVE mastered him, he's struggling to win the "promised" number of games based on what you would expect from a mastery curve (this is just one of the reasons). Long story short - we're buffing him because he is NOT a balanced champion currently, and it's our job to react to champions like him accordingly.

Now - other than the title of your post which is what I find to be most misleading, I can understand the sentiment from the body of your post and empathize with the feeling. If you're a Skarner main (not saying you are, but if a player is), they'd be much happier to see us working on Skarner as opposed to buffing Yasuo, but issues with champions with low play rates are (typically) more deep seated issues around core abilities, play pattern, thematic, visuals etc - all of which are likely better handled with something from a mini-update to a full blown VGU - many of which are the types of work the champion team would take on as opposed to the balance team. That's not to say we don't talk about those champions if there's quick wins we can get from the our teams perspective, but we need to make sure we're also focusing on "problems" we can get some progress on in the next patch, vs only focusing on longer term champion wins.

You can absolutely disagree with our decisions to buff/nerf certain aspects of League, that's part of what I love about our playerbase because it means you fucking care. But what I'd really appreciate is not having any time we try to engage turned into a spin fest for how our words can be used against us. Sorry if this came across super agro, just something I feel passionate about since I WANT to engage more, but also want it to be valuable for both sides - not incendiary.

You probably already know this but the boards this year have been extremely horrible.

I see people posting weird stuff and if it was up to the boards

Mages would have an AP version of hexdrinker that gives 10% cdr 400 mana and 50 AP for 1300g. Ahri syndra lux and every other AP champ would get buffed

Zed and yasuo would have a 33% win rate and be reworked. Adcs will not be viable anywhere and get kicked out by AP champs whom autos a.speed and dmg scale with AP 100% Infinity edge will cost 4k All zeal items will cost 3.2k

I thought the boards were pretty idiotic when i saw a thread that was upvoted titled

''a buff bruisers need''

and in the body was nerf adcs

If you take a bruiser top the reason you hate life is because Tanks are actually winning 1v1 trades against you top lane, you have no good runes and everyone is doing too much damage for a role thats suppposed to be somewhat tanky.

Yes even supports are doing too much damage. Not just adcs.

But the hate here is so real and biased that you cant even be offendedanymore.

Swarovsko16 votes

You're throwing so many lies out of that brain it's ridiculous. Mage mains just said that Hexdrinker is just way too powerful for a 1200 item(and ask yourself why none finishes it to item 3156 if you don't believe so) , none said that item 3191 needed buffs. The boards bitch about Ahri and Syndra too. None complained about Lux. Yasuo needs a rework, people only asked Zed/duskblade to be nerfed. Many threads wanted zeal items to cost 2800/2900 not 3200. Please stop whatever you're doing right now and think about the shit you just wrote... many threads like this are biased af but that doesn't mean that many other threads weren't good. You guys only see the negative.

Provengreil7 votes

this....theh exdrinker thing in particular stands out, as AP champs are often solving mana issues in a damage meta, while AD ones can quickly solve both damage AND defense issues against them whilst having low mana costs or running on another system entirely, usually energy in these cases.

All we want is for Yasuo to be less ... Yasuo. I'm not going to recount everything that's annoying about him. I'm willing to bet there's been millions of threads on that already. You know what's wrong. You have to. You can't possibly not.

Has anyone in Riot ever tried anything that would attempt to fix those issues?

Velzard of Koz18 votes

He didn't really take it out of context that far. It was still said that it would be unfortunate to let him struggle so long due to his popularity. I don't know how else it could've been understood than "Yeah there are champs with worse performance but fuck them they don't have enough popularity among players".

Yes, people on Boards tend to take out of context but you can't possibly shut down everything with "muh context", when recently it starts to look like you can say anything and take it back by pretending it was out of context. And self-victimize.

The problem I have with this is--why does popularity decide things? Balance should decide things, and only balance.

If Yasuo is the weakest champion in the game? Fine, fix him. If he's only underperforming, but still doing better than a number of other champions, why are you not working on those champions first?

Because their problems are harder to solve? Because I gotta say, if I ever tried the "it's too hard" line on MY boss, "tough" is all I would get back. I have a job, and I have to do it right, no matter how difficult it is.

He just said it was not decided by popularity. It's the 44% winrate. If it's a number issue, that can easily be fixed by numbers. If it's a systemic issue of their kit, the kind that needs a VGU, which is frequently the kind of issue that drives players away from the champion because it is not a numbers issue, not something that easily be fixed by either a quick test and tweek of numbers or by the player themselves, that is going to necessarily take a long time.

So you triage that. You change the numbers on the easy guy while an entirely different team continues their work on the latter one.

Audiomancy9 votes

But the win rate shouldn't matter. LeBlanc has historically had a winrate of 44-48% (though she's currently at about 50% as of this patch), yet she's seen nerf after nerf over the past 2-3 seasons. Why should Yasuo be any different?

Salron7 votes

Because Yasuo was fine at the end of last season and his winrate has since declined 4%

GigglesO4 votes

There were other champs fine at the end of last season, and have declined winrate. Why aren't we talking about those champs?

SuperLuigiLXIV5 votes

There comes a time when this "oh fix him he's easy to fix, we'll work on the harder stuff after" gets old.

I'm thinking, when that same line has shoved champs like Skarner to the back of the line for....well over a year at this point? Probably over two?

But oh no, we're not past time for triage to be thrown out in favor of a job done right, Yasuo's not in JUST EXACTLY THE PERFECT SPOT. Maybe after he can stop suffering winning less often for awhile, we can get to bigger problems.

Except these easily-fixed problems never seem to end. And the champions most in need of help seem to sit and collect dust.

Two years ago, this answer would have satisfied me, because it made sense.

But it only made sense because I thought the bigger problems were being worked on.

So now, no. This answer is not acceptable. Because either the problems are not being worked on, or they are being worked on but nobody's managed to come up with an answer, which means more time and resources are clearly needed to solve that problem.

And what about other champions that are struggling because of new runes?

For example Syndra doesn't have any rune setup with positive winrate (with Comet being the biggest offender, because you literally push people out of the AoE with E and QE) on top of having gamebreaking bugs.

You considered buffing Taliyah - who actually ended up benefiting from pre-season - over Syndra who's been struggling even before pre-season - perhaps, because those gamebreaking bugs are almost a year old.

Gamebreaking?

http://i0.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/010/692/19789999.jpg

What exactly would you consider "gamebreaking"? A gamebreaking bug is an untargetable, invincible Maokai that can kill you inside your fountain. Or, Zzrot's getting a MASSIVE bonus in damage when a player disconnects (enough damage to one shot towers). Or, an entire list of bugs that makes the champ/game completely unplayable.

That's what gamebreaking is, and so far, you are the first person I've seen that claims that Syndra has "gamebreaking" bugs. Does she have a couple? I wouldn't doubt it, since every champ has had it's share of bugs. Do these bugs make her completely useless? Not at all. She simply isn't favored right now, since, like you said, she doesn't have any appealing rune sets right now.

Sraeg20132 votes

Abilities that suddenly stop working, otherwise not work as intended and not being able to move properly under certain circumstances doesn't sound bad at all, you're right.

Also Zz'Rot "bug"?

http://i0.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/010/692/19789999.jpg

It was working exactly as intended.

The Yetii Rider3 votes

The bug he's referring to is when Zz'rot Portal deals a huge amount of damage to turrets after a player disconnects. This is because Zz'rot minions gain a bonus to damage based on the player's armor and MR, and a player's armor and MR each increase by about 1000 while they disconnect to help prevent them from dying to the enemy team.

Or at least, that's how it used to work. I feel like Zz'rot scales off health now, but I can't be bothered to check. I'm at work. Regardless, he knows exactly what a bug means.

Sraeg20131 votes

Zz'Rot Portal was DESIGNED to increase the damage of voidlings based on user's armor and magic resistance.

An intentional design by definition is NOT a bug.

It'd be a bug if user's armor and MR was increasing the damage despite the fact it should scale off, for example, maximum health_(as currently)_, because the programmer missed a comma at the end of a line or haven't properly commented the previous code off.

The Yetii Rider4 votes

But Zz'rot wasn't DESIGNED for people to plant it and then disconnect in order to smash a turret. It was designed for tanks to kill towers. People who buy armor and MR, not people who gain it because of the game trying to stop them from feeding.

Can you share any internal data on whether Yasuo's win rate differs significantly based on the team comps he's a part of?

I feel like Yasuo should see a below-50% win rate for two reasons, and you're only addressing one of them (that he's a high skill cap champion and players that haven't put a lot of time in to him will do poorly on him).

The second reason which I've not seen addressed anywhere, is that Yasuo simply does not fit in the majority of team comps in league. That should make him a niche champion, and yet as the graphs Riot released show he has the widest and deepest playerbase of all champions (I think largest breadth, and second deepest after Kayn).

That's a huge red flag to me. Why is a niche champion being played so much? Is it because the teams that allow him to thrive are super popular right now? Absolutely not. The meta is actually very against comps that Yasuo would thrive in. So the alternative is that players are picking Yasuo in the wrong situations.

Why is Riot buffing a champion who is losing games that he should lose?

What do you want your mid laner to bring to a game of league? Typically a threatening amount of magic damage, ranged waveclear to stall from behind, and some utility. If you look at historically good mid laners they all have all of these: Ahri Anivia Azir Cassiopeia Corki Ekko Lux etc... all demonstrate all of these properties. Yasuo demonstrates none of them.

What do you want your top laner to bring to a game of league? Typically engage, peel, tankiness. In the recent meta even more than ever, you want a lot of peel and tankiness to let your ADC thrive. Yasuo does none of this.

Then, Yasuo has a kit that's more dependent on allies than most champions. His ultimate is only usable on champions that are airborne, and he only has a somewhat unreliable way of doing it himself and often only on one target. Allies like Zac JarvanIV Alistar Malphite Braum Nami Ornn etc... are great for Yasuo because they can knockup multiple enemies fairly reliably. Most champions don't bring AOE knockups for Yasuo to thrive with.

You throw all of this together, and I'd expect that if Yasuo is being consistently picked with disregard to his team comp (which as we've all seen in solo queue, that last pick mid goes Yasuo in to allied Tryndamere Udyr Jinx). In games like that, he should lose. Yet I've had plenty of games like that where I'm on a true tank and stacking 300 armor and still struggling to win what should be free because Yasuo just puts out soo much damage through armor.

So what I want to know: is Yasuo mid seeing a sub-50% win rate in all team comps, or is his win rate varying a lot across different teams? What is Yasuo's average win rate with any of these champions on his team: Alistar Malphite Zac Chogath JarvanIV Zyra ? What about with these champions? Vi Janna, Support Brand (i.e. his support can bring the magic damage).

Or better yet, use the data to identify which champions Yasuo does well with, and see if he's consistently winning over 50% with a subset of specific champions.

Tell me those are under 50% and I can be on board with Yasuo buffs. If they're like 54% then I think it's clear that Yasuo mains are just picking him knowing it's not a good time to do so, and they shouldn't get compensated for that. They're volunteering to have a sub-50% win rate if they're going to pick like that.

So a "carry" champion should be only allowed to be good if his team mates pick champion that heavily favor it? You mean dictating 4 other picks by just picking 1? or auto lose?

So a "carry" champion should be only allowed to be good if his team mates pick champion that heavily favor it? You mean dictating 4 other picks by just picking 1? or auto lose?

Not in general, but when said carry has such heavy synergies with other champions, you're going to have a disparity in win rates depending on comps. It's a lot more fair to the non-Yasuo player base to give him a 40% win rate on other comps and a slightly over 50% win rate in his preferred comps, rather then a 50% win rate in his preferred comps and potentially a 60+ % win rate in his preferred comp. It's not our fault that Yasuo players only play Yasuo and won't adapt to allied picks (or one trick a generalist rather than a specialist). If you only play a specialist, you should expect to generally be at a disadvantage.

It's also not 4 other champions. The reason i listed the top row of champs separately is that they're examples of champs that alone in Yasuo's team can make it a decent comp for him. For example malphite brings a reliable aoe knockup, tankiness, engage, and magic damage.

Yasuo's ult varies from an unreliable single target cc and damage to a super reliable multi-target aoe damage ability.

It's not that they allow him to use his ult, it's that they make it much more reliable and able to hit more and better targets.

Not to mention Yasuo has other synergies: he benefits from allied magic damage threats that most mid laners bring themselves. He benefits more from ranged waveclear allies since he can't himself. Certain champions like zyra support bring all of this at once, so yes that's a heavy synergy.

But we buff Yasuo? at 46.5%?

Context is hard to understand but if you use the words big player base when talking about him that would mean that "phase" was also used when talking about balancing him or thought about. Why would you event say he has a big player base? Oh and Meta mean that they "best or easiest way to win". This would also imply its easier to win with him. Sure he has a lot of master player. How many Master players are fiddle..... maybe if there are more master tier of one champ that means it might be too strong regardless of win rate.

Other champs have suffered worst than him. Not that he hasn't gotten weaker. But you are ignoring other champs that are hurting more and have been hurting for a while. That is the real issue and its beyond me why you don't understand what is going on.

Your being flamed because of pick and choosing who to keep weak and strong so they are trying to find possible reasons why you are doing this. Sinister or not this is happening. To deny that truth would indicate its on purpose.

Try talking about the forgotten champs once in a while and this wouldn't be an issue. Only talking about "popular" champs because you think its what the boards what to hear (surprise is full on people not happy with their champs not only the popular ones. People come here for balance complains and reddit for pros) you will always be in for heart ache. The last time I heard about fiddle was he is kinda strong with the new runes..... then his win rates all tanks but for mid because if can fight again some of the assassins.

Then Yasuo is good against mages. Mages are weak did this come into the conversation?

Please time me if this logic makes sense to you.

Players play the strongest champs to win. Yasuo has the largest number of people playing him. Yasuo is not one of the strong champs just people like playing him.

edit: oh and all you are going to do is piss people off more because he will be banned all the time. Because if this goes through no mage will stand a chance.

SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE FOLKS IN THE BACK! QUOTING IS GREAT (W/SOURCE) BUT ADDING THINGS NO ONE SAID IS MISLEADING!

The OP has since revised the OP, maybe you can actually add something useful as a red given the thread is directed towards the actions of riot's balance team.

If nothing else, you can perhaps explain why the fuck we're forced to use third party websites that you people declare "inaccurate" instead of being given this oh so precious, top secret company data (champion wr, pr, br, etc.) that would surely compromise the company!

You're misinformed and spreading misinformation. You're toxic.

 1. Morde was worked on HEAVILY after his rework. Like...HEAVILY. Malicious Metal made sure of that.

 2. Yasuo isn't being buffed because of his player base. It's because he's been one of the worst champions in the game all preseason long on top of having a very dedicated player base. People use his player base as an argument that "He's good, but he's just difficult", when in actuality he just sucks and the players don't want to drop him.

Stop spreading bad info.

A rioter even said they are buffing yas because hes popular you geniua

"He's a champion that stands the test of time in regards to popularity even when he's weak. Meaning that the number of people playing Yasuo before/after preseason is probably actually roughly equal, only the version they're playing after is far weaker. This translates to more games with a Yasuo in them likely translating to a stomp for the team with a Yasuo on them, because even when they've mastered the champion over hundreds of games, they're "reward" is still losing over half their games, which bucks the trend of what you would expect from a mastery curve."

Careful... actual facts burn vampires.

Tho OP is a bit missinformed,he kinda right. There are many champions who are doing bad just like Yasuo, but aren't seeing buff in the slightlest, yet his playerbase is the reason why he's getting buff.

Because he has a large players base and he's weak(not debating that),combined would equal to more games lost just of his presence in them. Yet Cass for example has a small players base, isn't doing too great herself, but didn't see buffs in the slightlest. Fact is,his playerbase was a factor, myb not a primary, but still.

Because his winrate is actually lowered due to his insane player rate, if he had a 6% play rate instead then chances are his winrate would be really positive. Also Leesin tends to get buffed near when pro play starts back up if he is seen as a bit weak.

Just because you don't see lee sin alot doesn't mean that others don't see him get played alot. E.G I've only seen sejuani once in my games. Do you represent the whole league player population?

Then explain why Lee Sin isn't getting buffed.

to be fair, he got buffed several times in the past just to make him popular again, more W shields, health % max damage on ult etc etc he had been meta for YEEEEARS untill finally they allowed him some rest with some nerfs

LOSINGISMYPRIDE17 votes

he has a 25.07 % playrate with 48.83 % winrate http://na.op.gg/champion/leesin/statistics/jungle

I love that on these forums anything 49.9% is weak and 50.01% is op... Wish more people saw balance like you did lol.

he's picked in a quarter of all high elo games and still maintains a respectable winrate?

that's what this guy is pointing out

PandemicPanda533 votes

They said their buffing Yasuo because even with a large player base, the dedicated players don't perform well enough. Your bias is showing.

DarkRooster6 votes

If anything has been biased patch after patch, its balance team. Yasuo still has broken hand holding mechanics all over him that is bound to piss everyone off.

RenownedWheat429 votes

Those hand-holding mechanics are so busted and OP that his winrate has dropped substantially!

Wait -

I feel like that's just an indirect result of the meta. Because lock down champions are extremely popular now and that's yasuo's main weakness especially because he is a dash in melee. Zed isn't facing said problems because he can quickly switch bodies/teleport a distance and reach the target, Yasuo has to dash in to the likes of Maokai Nautilus Leona Thresh Lulu MalzaharBraum Janna which are all fairly popular right now. It's not that he's weak or needs buff it's a kit issue vs the current common face of the game.

You know this is they type of attitude that unbalances your game and keeps trash tier champions trash. Maybe if you cared about all champions more equally then we wouldn't have this balance fiasco.

The thread went

Player A: "Riot is making Yasuo OP. they're buffing Yasuo because Riot's like 'we need something to be even more broken than ADC cause we must stop the boards from complaining about it'. We have to stop this, this is BS!"

Rioter: "Yasuo has a 44-45% winrate. Not buffing him [like you ask] will leave him feeling bad for a lot of people."

Player B: "only a few people play him"

Rioter: "that's quite incorrect, he's quite popular"

And now we have you and Player C going, "they're buffing him because he's popular; Riot said so".

Your framing of the situation is just a teeny bit on the disingenuous side.
