Do I augment my main role, or expand to my sub roles?

Blue Collar Bear··1 votes·891 views

Hi, boards! I play top/jungle/support at Diamond elo. I have quite a sum of IP, but I honestly don't know what to do with the new queues coming out. I have quite a few champions in my pool for each role that I play. I have at least two or three champions I play in each role comfortably, but I don't even own an ADC. I own maybe two or three mid laners that I'm comfortable with. So, do I buy an ADC? Do I buy mid laners that might suit me better, or do I buy more champions to specialize in my roles?

Yes.

Maybe you could give us an idea of what your champion pool and preferred playstyles are before coming to ask us about buying a new champion.

Especially considering most people here aren't in Diamond.

Good idea! It's fairly rare that I don't get my preferred roles. I haven't had to dodge a game, because I got stuck with ADC in the last 200~ games easily.

Top: Hecarim, Alistar, Rengar Jungle: Rengar, Nocturne, Xin Zhao Mid: Cho'Gath, Pantheon, Nocturne Support: Alistar, Braum

There's a little bit of overlap, but it cut down a lot on the champions I had to practice with. There's also the issue that I tend to play Rengar waaaay too much when another champion would be better. So, I'm looking to replace him in the top lane with another champion that does something differently. As you can see, the champions I play lack wave clear, escapes, outplay potentials, and they're all-in which I like to play a lot. I like to scale and I like to snowball at the same time. What do you think?

Maokai Rammus Malphite Darius Sion Nautilus Zac JarvanIV

Based more around your top laners than your mid, you seem like a person who none-the-less likes to decide when a fight's going to happen. and like to stay around for a while.

Jarvan is only in there because at your level of play, Cataclysm is an extremely powerful ultimate that could well decide the entire game with a strong enough teamfight. Maokai is a strong teamfighting tank thanks to his amazing ultimate. Rammus is very prevalent through this preseason for his ability to counter the current meta, Malphite also. Darius is Juggernaut, meaning he has little mobility but if you aren't focused down (and you are a Bruiser so technically that's a bad idea) you are going to wreak havoc in their team. Sion, Nautilus, and Zac all make excellent Disruption Tanks and can keep your opponents locked down while your teammates do all the damage but have pretty good carry potential given the right builds.

Maokai Rammus are two I can think of, but they both have decent waveclear tbh. Darius lacks mobility but considering you like Rengar and tankier tops a lot he may be worth investigating.

Sion Nautilus Zac JarvanIV may also interest you. 'Lacking Wave Clear, Escapes' isn't really a good thing but I think based on your tops and supports, you seem to be more Tank focused. Jarvan's more of a Bruiser but his Ultimate could seriously make a hell of a Wombo at your level of play.

Wombo combos used to be popular, but now, it's all about dominating your lane. I've had more 20m games where the enemy Darius/Fiora/etc get a few kills and they win off that alone. The longer games go, the more important composition tends to be. Don't get me wrong. I've had just as many 40m games.

I've actually looked into Rammus heavily, and I'm considering picking him up. He just gets so ridiculously tank-y and he does sooo much damage. Now that Last Whisper only negates bonus armor, tanks are actually in a really good spot. Fighters who can stack resists are in an even better spot. How does he fare against ADCs that aren't Kog'Maw, like Graves and MF?

I own Maokai, and I've had a difficult time getting used to him. I used to have him in my pool, but I always had a hard time deciding which would be better: Alistar or Maokai? Do you think even with the previous nerfs to him that he's still good? He lost a lot of solo laning dominance with his ult nerf.

Sion, Nautilus, and J4 are champions I've had a good time with. I feel like they take a lot of practice, though. Would you give me some ideas as to when and why you'd use them? I always need to know what I'm picking a champion for, and it's largely preceded by my knowledge of the champion (which I don't have much of for these outside of a few troll-y games). Zac is someone I'm really, really interested in, but I'm not sure I can justify the 6300 IP when I'm looking for two or three champions to practice. As for Darius, I know it hurts me competitively that I can't and don't want to play him, but I just dislike his thematics, kit, and play style.

I actually heavily edited my comment before you responded but...

Rammus is strong against pretty much anyone that's heavily invested in auto-attacks. In cases like Lucian and Corki, he's not going to do as well because they primarily do damage through spells.

Honestly Maokai can still be good with the right items but you do have a point. If you are looking more to crush your opponent and win lane hard than thinking about Teamfights, Alistair is better (though Ali still has good teamfighting, don't get me wrong)

Sion is a very heavy initiator, someone who also uses a lot of knock-ups. I would advise against picking him if your enemy is someone like Vladimir or Riven who can 'dodge' your ultimate but low-mobility compositions work in his favor. If you can knock them up with your Charge, follow up with your Q Knock-up. If your team loses the fight, it's their fault, trust me.

Nautilus CC is more single-target and even his mobility effect is a skillshot, but if you can manage to get to the back line, you will cause very serious trouble, particularly with your Ultimate. Use Nautilus if there's that one motherfucker you really need to keep irrelevant at all stages of the game.

JarvanIV is more of a Jungler from what little of him I have seen, but even if you take him top, he works great with mid-laners who primarily use Area of Effect abilities, like Anivia, Orianna, and Velkoz. He also works well with top-laners like Rumble and even junglers like Amumu. If a lot of your team's damage potential is focused on a certain area, Jarvan's an excellent choice.

Zac is a powerful initiator who builds a lot of health but with the right build can still be an extreme nuisance to the enemy even after he's gone in. I recommend watching some videos or something, I know he's expensive but he can be really fun.

No one's judging you on Darius. You don't like a Champion, don't play them, simple as that. Anyone who says otherwise can go to hell.

I haven't played either in a very long time, so no thoughts on either right now, sorry :/

I would have said learn at least a couple champs for all roles. But with the new queue, you don't even have to know how to play 4/5 roles and you can get challenjour. So it just depends. I'm trying to learn a lot of champs, but that's because I get bored playing the same thing over and over again.

On a side note, I think the new queue is stupid as fuck. If people wanted to play team builder, they could have. They completely eliminated soloQ for no reason.

We knew they were going to make Teambuilder the new default for at least the past year, it was only a matter of when and how.

Doesn't make it any less dumb lol.

In the middle. Didnt have a problem with the entire post until you said they removed Solo Q for no reason.

lol good one

PDE5 Inhibitors1 votes

Except they did. We already had teambuilder and ranked 5s/3s. All they did was punish solo players. Not too mention that the ranked system is going to be even less accurate than it was.

luckmallory1 votes

There were a million and one problems with Solo Q. They fixed a ton of those. That doesn't mean the new system doesn't have any problems of its own but it provides far less then Solo Q ever did and is a much less toxic system. Also, nobody is stopping you from Q'ing by yourself. Riot already stated that if you Q with 3 or 4 people you are going to get matched with another 3 or 4 man premade. It evens out. They clearly said there is no chance of somebody making a 5 man premade then going against 5 Solo Q players. It won't happen.

Solo Q before this was absolutely disgusting how horribly it was designed. This new system lets you have more control over your own climbing now that you can Q with your friends and know for sure you won't be getting a troll. Plus the changes to promos are great too.

I have always firmly believed that i am at least a Plat level player and I seem to always be stuck in Gold 1 where I have a better win rate then most people in Plat but I seem to get fucked every Promo series to Plat or I simply get too many people who feed. I know my friends won't feed and now I have better control over climbing to a skill level that I believe I am at.

PDE5 Inhibitors1 votes

What issues are teambuilder fixing from soloQ? You aren't guaranteed not having trolls unless you 5 man pre-made...in which case what's the difference between that and ranked 5s?

Well, I cannot play ADC to save my life. I think the role is just too position reliant, and it's the exact opposite of how I play. I've not even considered it, really. However, the new team builder is something to keep in mind. We don't know how it's gonna work yet. Roles could still be swapped a fair amount, and it could even be rejected by the community.

To continue your side note, imagine not ever having an afk again. No feeders, no ragers. It comes with its own set of problems, but I, for one, will take harder opponents if it means that I have the option to choose who I play with.

PDE5 Inhibitors1 votes

To be honest, you are in for an awakening if you think teambuilder in ranked is going to get rid of ragers or feeders or afkers lol. Unless you are going to make 5 man pre-mades every game....in which case you can just play ranked 5s.
