Good reworks vs bad reworks

The new Irelia gives me a great chance to finaly show what bothered me with swains rework, and how good reworks work vs bad reworks.

The beauty part is, I dont have to go in ayn technical detail, I just have to say this:

If RIOT had not removed the old Irelia and put the new one into the game without telling us it was supposed to be a rework, just changing the names of her passive and Q and not naming her Irelia, Within the first few minutes after her release, everyone who played with or against her would immediatly say: "Wait... thats just Irelia 2.0...." If RIOT had kept the old Swain in the game and added the new Swain as a Champion of a different name, changing the name of nevermove, people wouldnt have figured out he is supposed to be swain to this very day and most liekly would never figure it out!

A Good rework keeps the Champion intact. A bad rework just deletes a champion and replaces him with a new one by the same name.

nah ur wrong that champ is swain af.

How? He looks different has not one ability that resembles his old kit, has no more ravens in his kit, no more beatrice with him...

Outside from one of his abilities being called "nevermove" what has stayed "Swain" on this champion?

There's literally ravens that spawn all around him, they fly towards him whenever he procs his passive, and they're in his joke.

His ult is near identical to the old version as well

I think you actually could make a way better argument that Swain is easier to call swain before the new irellia.

The best rework was Warwick, there was not a single thing they didn't change; but at the same time he worked and felt almost completely the same! Just with bonus features.

Another one that was brilliant was Tristina.

Some of the total relaunches though; the old champion was unsalvagable. IMO; Poppy, Sion, and Taric needed brand new stuff entirely and they got it.

It depends on the champ... Hopefully we don't have any more total new relaunches though, even the oldest one, Nunu; should keep at least 50% of his kit and style.

No, a good rework makes the champion healthier to play as and against, as well as delivering on the intended fantasy and giving the champion a much more fleshed out identity and lore.

Poppy went from a blue gnome from wherever to a Demacian yordle who seeks the Hero to give him or her the Hammer, not knowing she is actually the person she's been looking for all along. Her new kit is healthier and much better and much more fun to play.

Galio went from generic gargoyle number 92834592856891746891647341 to a Petricite made Colossus. Petricite is the white stones Demacia is built of that blocks magic, hence delivering much more on his anti magic damage fantasy and linking those properties of his kit with his lore.

Warwick became an actually scary humanoid wolf, and it's now undeniable that his origins are Zaun and his creator, Singed. His kit is much better as well. His Q is an actual bite now, his scent mechanic is more fleshed out, his attack speed mechanic is conditional instead of pressing a button and applies only to himself, his ult is a skillshot and gains range the more MS he has. The fantasy of him being a jungler that clear slowly, but healthily is maintained.

Swain's case is the same as all the others. Look at old Swain, compare him to all the already released content on Noxus both gameplay and lore wise and tell me unironically he belongs there, as their General, no less. Lore and kit wise, new Swain IS the Grand General. Old Swain was just a crippled, senile old man by comparison.

hell no, this galio is so boring and simple af, everybody can play first game with him and be good

KoolDood691 votes

he has so much utility and hes the only tank midlaner, I think he brought a lot to the game.

Ye he is tank thats why i think he is boring, old galio was so much fun when u were full ap and land 5 man ult

Swain ult kinda gives it away tho. And I feel he is a more nuanced version of his old self. That whole 'lets just morph and feast' thing always felt kinda off. Awesome as it might have been (in URF).

really? His new Ultimate has more in common with Nasus or Renekton than it has with the old swain. Its not even a bird form, its some edgy demon/fallen angel stuff...

I love every single rework except Galio. I really hate how it became a totally different champion with a totally different role. I even hate fighting or playing him, but I really loved old Galio (awesome kit, really fun to play)

Bad reworks

Swain, Darius, Sion

They are not the same champion and should be released under different names

ModWulf Helhammer2 votes

Are you referring to the juggernaut update for Darius, where his skills only got minor changes, and are basically the same thing?

And old Sion was toxic design that made no sense.

HaIlMonitor1 votes

They already did the first option once....

Diana

Ekko

Just people didn't notice...

And some reworks are needed because champs like Swain and Irelia are technically outdated with abilities that no longer flow with league (more like tumble) or themes that are no longer as prevalent.
