Some assassins and burst delay: brainstorm

Is it a good thing? A bad thing? A good implementation of counter play? A bad implementation of counter play? What are alternatives and why?

Lets discuss!

Let me start: getting bursted from 100-0 with seemingly little input of my own, is not very good design. Riot are right in their zeal to address this. However, I don't think adding a delay to burst is the right way to go. It's a universal method which can be applied to the kits of a lot of champs. It's also a very uninspired method. Some champs even feel alienated because of it (by the accounts of assassin mains I have talked to). In my book, counterplay has to be more interactive. If someone decides to burst you down, he/she should have a personal and unique weakness which the “bursted“ can play around. If the assassin covers his/her weakness better than the victim can exploit it, than dying 100-0 in less than half a sec shouldn't be an issue. This idea isn't even new, but maybe difficult to implement.

Assassins being able to 100-0 a squishy is literally the purpose of their role, to assassinate a priority target. Now before the counterplay to this was to ward, position properly, and have reliable cc to kill the assassin before he kills your main source of damage, that was the counterplay, the assassin risks his life to kill a priority target often giving his team the edge in a teamfight and if the assassin is caught he'll usually get punished and put his team at a disadvantage.

Now what Riot has gone and done is threw positioning properly and warding out the window, nerf'd the base damage assassins dealt then added a delay on whatever damage the assassin still had resulting in the meta we have today where ADC are dominating due to the role that counters them being steaming hot garbage.

I think the way to fix this is remove delay on an assassin's damage, giving them back their damage, and add a bit of movement speed to them while decreasing the range/duration of their gap closers.

This will not only force the assassin to reveal themselves giving the adc the chance to react but also adds some counterplay to adc's themselves by making assassins an actual threat again.

You say that you should implement weakness in the kit of an assassin to play around, but you don't give an example what such a weakness could be. And I personally think that delayed burst is a good idea.

Think about it like that: An assassins job is to burst you down from 100 to 0 in a short period of time. You want to implement a weakness to play around of. The problem is: If he instantly bursts you down from full health, you actually don't have the time to play around a mechanic. You are instantly bursted to death, how are you supposed to use your movement or other stuff to play around his kit if it works instantly?

That's why it is delayed. Because if it is delayed, it gives you the time that is needed to react to him. He still bursts you down, but he gives you a time window beforehands to try to avoid this.

But this doesn't apply to SA kayn or Diana who by the way just q w r and insta dead in 1 second.

Don't know what was the thought process behind SA Kayn, maybe they thought that his downside is that his target access is telegraphed, since you see that spot on the wall he is travelling through.

Diana is a problem case in general, she is not supposed to be an assassin, she is aimed to be a diver. Shifting her away from burst more in the direction of sustained damage would be reasonable in my opinion.
