Riot likes true damage because of reasons. Next they'll make Nasus's Q do true damage or something and have 800 range. "We wanted to reward Nasus players by making it so that there is literally no counter to him."

It's actually easier to balance true damage and control a champions power throughout the game.

GreenLore6 votes

you know.....buying health kinda helps against true damage....

Sinister Fox6 votes

Except that Garen's ult is %missing hp true damage (an execute) , Fiora's Ult true dmg is % per hit for 4 hits as well as her passive :P I'm not really complaining about true dmg but when it's % true dmg I don't think that building hp will actually matter xD

LeeDark2 votes

No, it does matter. Nobody has FULL true damage in their kits. They do some physical and some magic, and even for Vayne, some of her true damage isn't based on a percentage of your health. Until there is a champion who does percentage max health true damage on EVERY skill and auto attack, health will still be the most effective defensive stat against true damage.

Ackelope7 votes

Imagine someone has an ability that does 10% of the enemy's maxhp as true dmg. Now will it take longer to kill Bob the guy with 100 health, or Phil, the guy with 100 million bilion health? (Hint: It will take 10 hits each). Building health vs %maxhp true dmg doesn't help reduce or protect you from that %maxhp true dmg in any way, Vayne will still kill you about as fast. I'd say the most effective defense vs a Vayne is lots of armor to reduce her non-true dmg, and attack spd slows to prevent her from proccing silver bolts as much as you can. Mixing in a bit of health will help against her flat true dmg, but overall, building mostly health vs Vayne, Fiora, or anyone else with %maxhp true dmg will really not help you much at all.

Except when the true damage is based off of HP.

In comparison: KogMaw passive is restricted to 500 damage if it hits, that is all. MasterYi E deals 10-30 Bonus true damage (+ 10-20% of his AD)

both of these you can build health to stay alive

Vayne and Garen on the other hand it doesn't matter how much health you have since the damage is based off your health. Even if you don't build health you are still screwed since they can just kill you the old fashioned way.

Making his Q deal true damage instead of physical would kill Nasus since he won't have ANY sustain and his passive would be so useless.

Who needs sustain when you can one shot everything?

Rito, why you do this to me? Rubbing salt in the wound is just poor form.

Ralanr5 votes

No counterplay to Veigar's stun? Yes there is, it's called "not touching the wall".

GreenLore6 votes

the problem was with the old veigar wall, which could spawn directly under your feet. Thus against a good veigar, there was no option to "not touch the wall"

Ralanr2 votes

Can't it still do that? I'm pretty sure it still does that. What's the difference now (I don't know how far back we are going, just consider me uneducated).

GreenLore5 votes

Originally the wall was created instantly, which means that you ran around and boom there was a wall under you and you were stunned.

Now the wall actually has a slight delay, you can see where the wall will spawn before it actually appears,so if veigar puts it directly under your feet, you can simply step aside.

Grey Deaf Orthro7 votes

Old Veigar's stun was instant. Good luck not touching a wall placed directly through you.

Morgana item 3157 item 3139 item 3222 item 3157 item 3111 These could destroy a Veigar if used wisely.

Its not that Veigar could't be countered, that bullshiit, you can easily counter him by building MR/HP and engage in battle with him right after he used his kit, because he couldnt do anything after everything is on cd. And dont forget that you could easily evade the meteor with item 3111 and with item 3157 you can evade his ult, which realy isnt hard with this item. Also he had a VERY weak early game, which could make him useless for the rest of the game if played good. There is a reason why he wasnt sen so often in LCS, because he was easy to counter if you know how to.

And by the way, if a Veigar could land his Stun directly on you, every time, then he was a very good Veigar (or you were far to predictable)

LeeDark4 votes

The stun made him incredibly safe in the early game. He wasn't weak by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, he didn't do much DAMAGE, but you also couldn't gank him. He'd just throw down his stun, zone both the laner and jungler off, and laugh. Then he'd hit six and get his first kill with ult. The problem was that Veigar never wanted to use his stun offensively early on. The stun duration isn't long enough to reliably land Dark Matter, and you didn't need the stun to harass with Q... not to mention not really wanting to harass with Q. Veigar's plan was to sit back and farm, so he could save his stun for emergencies, making him even safer. Compare this to Zed, who also has a very safe early game because of his shadow. Zed, however, wants to use his shadow to actively harass and try to get kill pressure on his opponent, giving your team windows of opportunity to gank him.

Yes, Morgana was a great counter to Veigar, but you can't base a champion's counterplay solely on champ select. Opponents of Veigar absolutely needed a way to outplay him in the early game, and making the stun harder to hit was the right way to do it. It was far too weak at first, but after the buff shortly thereafter, it has been fine.

SirPacifista2 votes

you can't base a champion's counterplay solely on champ select

That may be true, but right now many champions have a distinct advantage over Veigar, like Zed and Talon which are ad mids, who make Veigar ult really weak AND can ignore his cage completly. Fizz Shaco Ezreal Katarina Morgana and Vladimir Vlad can also COMPLETLY ignore his only means of cc, reliable and with a very low cd. Veigar cant outplay these champions, but they can outplay him with ease, thats why his old instant stun was fair for him. And it`s not like you would hit 5 people with the stun reliable, its still circle formed and the enemys arent stupid for that too happen.

Also DOES he had and still have a VERY weak early game, even before he got nerfed, at least at lower elo, i dont talk at something under plat, most people, gold and under it just doenst understand how to play against him. I mean, what CAN Veigar do in the first 15 min? even when he hit his stun, its not like he can kill anyone with 1 combo if you even bought one item 1033. Thats what most peopel dont understand, Veigar is weak, he only becomes strong when you play defensivly aka passive aginst him, if that happens then its your own fault.

But the upper chapter is more important, its unfair how he is useless against certain champions, but can block Tristana Ahri Tryndamere and Malphite abilities, but the above cant be blocked.

Ftfy. True damage can be countered by building HP, %hp true damage is a lot harder to deal with and requires you to take different measures depending on which champion you're against.

Well to be fair, in some champs cases like garen it's conditional true damage.

Yes, but... As long as these Vayne Gnar Fizz item 3153 item 3151 are popular, stacking health will always be very risky.

That's two champions out of the 120+ in the game, and those two have extreme caveats. Garen can only deal true damage to the villain, and Fiora has to exercise extreme maneuverability to do it properly and consistently.

and thats it. Others that I don't play might have true dmg but thats at max like 3 others.

So....13 champs that deal true dmg.....plus maybe 2 more that I may have forgotten so 15 champs do true dmg....

edit: wow I forgot who I used to main.....thats depressing

Lee doesn't deal true damage.

Corki Passive. Velkoz Passive.

And if we want to be nitpicky:

KogMaw Passive. Zyra Passive.

I'd say that 17 out of 126(?) champions is a considerable amount, especially considering that this damage type should be rare (and %health true damage shoud be nonexistent).
