@Riot: Why does Mordekaiser's W operate the way it does?

Right now, Morde's W is the hardest-to-understand skill in the entire game. It gives MS when you move towards your shielded ally and damages enemies near you, but ONLY if they're in the overlapping area between you and your ally - and can be reactivated to immediately collapse the shield, but gain health? That's a lot of moving parts in one ability, even disregarding the strange fact that it only does damage where the fields overlap.

So why doesn't his W just damage all nearby enemies? How come the decision was made to make it only cause damage in the overlapping area instead of the entire area?

Because they made his Q do a million dmg, so the W is his "mobility/Utility" spell
