Regardless of Mordekaiser's state of balance, the rework missed the mark entirely

Helmight··112 votes·6,926 views

So I really like Mordekaiser. He was the second champion I ever unlocked, and I played him quite a bit despite him being laughably bad. I own all of his skins. I think he's a lot of fun to play. And today, I finally had a chance to try the rework.

Holy hell.

Mordekaiser doesn't feel like Mordekaiser anymore. Mordekaiser doesn't really feel like anyone now, if we're being honest. He is an entirely different champion. His abilities feel more esoteric and harder to encapsulate and actually explain to people. His build feels awful and looks weird. Every one of his basic abilities feels awful. Playing duo bot with Morde is actually kinda fun, but the things they did to him negate the novelty of the concept.

His Q feels awful, since unless enemies stand in melee range, it does fuck-all. His E feels worthless now and does piss-all damage, plus I feel like it misses far more often than it hits now. His W meanwhile is an appalling nightmare. Protip: If you need bullet points to explain what an ability does when it doesn't have multiple use cases (i.e. Lulu W + E, Tahm W), it needs to be changed. The fact that it has conditional damage, a conditional heal, and randomly generates speed means I don't actually even know the best use case anymore. Is it sustain? A shield? A "run away" ability? Who knows?

His builds are weird now, since hybrid is really the only option for him anymore and Riot has nerfed hybrid items into the ground because they're too hard to itemize against. Is he a tank? Is he a burst mage? Again, nobody knows. All we know is that his build is a hodgepodge of strange items that only one champion would ever build in conjunction with each other.

The old Mordekaiser had an identity, even if it was at odds with his appearance and was generally anti-fun. But the new Morde - even if it's regarded as more healthy for the game as a whole - is objectively worse.

Simplify Morde's W and allow for self-casting. Get rid of his random AD scalings. Incentivize Morde to build tank. Bam - you just fixed Mordekaiser and didn't have to re-rework him. But to allow Mordekaiser to exist in the state he's currently at is criminal.

Tl;dr Morde needs a re-rework because the current one is awful.

Top Lane Mprdekaiser main here, I've been playing him since mid season three and even then I built him Ap-Bruiser, the vision Riot had for him in the first place. He worked perfectly fine and had his strengths and weaknesses, which could be exploited very easily. Now Riot claims he's unhealthy in solo lanes, even more so than Vlad, who they crowned the worst release they've ever pulled off. Let me tell you a secret Riot, Mordekaiser's EVEN MORE UNHEALTHY now that his gameplay's so polarizing; -Get in melee range-> Hooray, you've won the game -Get kited->Die

His weaknesses are far more glaring but they're easily overcome with a support, making him great in duo lanes but really, really shitty in solo lanes. Heck, I've played him nonstop since his rework and I either win my lanes gloriously or get my teeth kicked in. What makes matters worse is that instead of ENTICING him to go bot they actively FORCE him to, making me cringe every time I have to skip putting points in my W when playing Top.

He needs changes, this is a FACT! His ADC winrate's 56% while his solo lanes all barely manage to stay above 40%. This is utterly disgusting and Riot should really look into this. GIVING HIM HIS W BACK would be a start. /Rant//

Seriously though, he does feel more like a hulking Heavy Metal Monstrosity (HHMM) but at the expense of either completely stomping the opposition or being crushed like a can of soda. His solo experience is heavily tainted by the fact that you effectively only have access to 2 abilities during laning phase, 3 if you count his ultimate. So Riot, help us SoloKaisers out, will ya?

What were the weaknesses of a permapushing melee ap caster that turned into a bruiser simply thanks to his shield passive? His lack of cc? His lack of mobility? That's the price you pay for being a braindead point and click pusher, with insane burst and dps, that has a permanent "get near me and die while I out-trade you thanks to my spellvamp and stupid shield passive" zone of influence.

Build him bruiser, still do stupid damage while being naturally hard to kill and having the shield passive on top of it. He's the worst champion to lane against, even worse than Yorick, who is gated by his RIDICULOUS mana issues, lack of escapes and the fact that is legitimately useless out of the laning phase.

there was significantly more to old morde than just "braindead push", but to sum it up briefly, morde wasn't a champion all about mechanics so much as about good positioning. players who could position well with morde could do a lot. vision control was important for morde, and if morde couldn't get vision control out, he would end up being dead meat. if he just braindead pushed the lane then he would get punished by enemy junglers. there also are plenty of champs who could outright kill morde in his early stages, and plenty of champs that had damage to compete with morde.

and there are plenty of champs that are worse to lane against, trust me.

Here we have a pattern in correlation to Kassadin, for explanatory reasons:

Here we have a champion that's plain cancer, acknowledged by many as problematic boring and binary, with massively oppressing strengths. All of a sudden there's every possible idiot standing up to him as a champion with multiple weaknesses and whatnot, everyone ready to jump the gun and crucify whoever has something bad to say about Mordekaiser.

With Kassadin's case, not only he got ravaged and fucked by Riot, there's nobody that's standing up to him. Both are considered cancer by many, but here we have an instance of a champion with THE WORST pre-6, one of the worst laning phases and weakest early games. With clear and direct hard counters, outclassed by 95% of midlaners. Kassadin only had his mobility going for him. But nobody cares, Kassadin is all of a sudden cancer, toxic, trash, easy as fuck, freelo, auto-win, permabanned, what have you.

What makes Mordekaiser so special that he's worth defending this atrocity? I haven't enjoyed a single freaking game playing against a Mordekaiser since I joined this game back in the Nami patch. I could list you a shitton of reasons why Kassadin is one of the hardest to master champions in the game, but Mordekaiser is all of a sudden a benchmark of strategic thinking, outplaying, zone controling and laning mastering. All those who lack escapes are vulnerable to jungle ganks, not all are stupid enough to get themselves killed though, so you can't justify this crap with the excuse 5% of Mordekaiser players are going to overextend without vision thus getting themselves ganked and killed. And good luck dueling this ball of toxic stats during laning.

you're telling me about the tribulations of kassadin. I can't really comment on kassadin as I don't play him nor have I really played him seriously before, but I never found kassadin to ever be a problem, before or after his nerfs. kassadin never felt as overwhelming as say swain, akali once she hits 6, or annie, or diana, or even talon once he hits 6.

you listed me good reasons why kassadin was hard to master. you don't see me telling you otherwise, do you? I dont think I ever said kassadin was OP before, nor did I deny that he was hard to master

however, I listed you good reasons why morde wasn't as toxic as you might think and why he took more than just "braindead push" as you yourself described it as. it was morde's strength of pure waveclear which also became his weakness in the form of vulnerability to jungle ganks. morde didn't always have his shield up, and he had to get into melee range to use half of his kit at all. he also had no CC, or no mobility, or no built in sustain (morde had to itemize for that)

now, however, morde has become MORE toxic and even MORE binary than he ever was. put W on support, walk into waves, push them AND sustain off of them. the spellvamp morde built pre-rework never sustained him that much, even when he had 6 items. morde right now is sustaining better than he ever did without even itemizing spellvamp.

Kassadin was mentioned as a comparison thanks to how similarly the behavior of those against them is. But I didn't take into account you might know nothing about him, since 95% of the posters here pull stuff out of their asses and downvote for disagreeing with their nonsense, so I just jumped to conclusions.

I've been away from home for a month know, still haven't played the new updates so I don't have an opinion on the matter yet. My salt levels are a result of how fucking bad of an experience I personally have every single time I lane against a Mordekaiser, in combination with all those(what I consider pitiful)excuses made by Mordekaiser mains. All of a sudden there are lots of them, before, nobody knew him. And since the treatment Kassadin and Mordekaiser got is similar, I extrapolated based on the fact that nobody stood up to Kassadin despite how fucking hard he had it for him, yet for Mordekaiser who I personally consider toxic everyone lost their minds.

the salt is understandable, i think kass got hit way too hard, and his 42% winrate definitely reflects that.

what specifically makes you believe old morde to be toxic? (genuinely curious, not sarcasm)

This is the part that frustrates me the most. Repertoire at least heard our concerns and met us halfway, even though he didn't think we were right. Sure, Garen is slated for more nerfs on the PBE right now, but at least we all had a chance to see how good the new Garen really was first. CertainlyT, on the other hand, said nothing except "I am right" and ignored everyone else. THAT bugs me more than every other aspect of the Mordekaiser rework.

And to think that Riot prides itself on being "player first".

An analogy of this summary would be,

The End.

Fixes that would make everyone happy.

  1. Give Q a small AoE on each strike, full damage at the point of impact and lesser damage on targets farther away from the impact point if you must.
  2. Give W a lesser version of it for self casting.
  3. Buff E's base damage.

Ta-da Morde is now fixed, took me only 5 seconds.

EDIT: Basically, a superior old Morde if you haven't realised.

Count Zubat7 votes

I completely 100% agree with all things said in this post. Morde was not only completely ripped off his identity, but also his rework took bad direction. For one: why even add AD scaling? Pre-rework, Morde had little of an AD scaling on Q, but it was widely considered as a noob trap. The added .6 AD scaling to E didn't compensate any of the nerfed base damage, and because of that, it is just impossible to build in order for E to actually be useful ability. In 1v1 scenarios, he is completely ripped off one of his basic abilities, W, which became such a situational spell if you are playing solo lane. His whole power is now stored within his Q, which has broken scalings, allowing to deal over 1k damage with only Rylai and Trinity. Riot considered pre-rework Morde unhealthy, but in reality, they made his playstyle more toxic now, because of how strong his Q is. Old Morde was a champion who was scaling really well into late game, early on being poke mage with his quite high base damages, and then, as the game went on, becoming burst mage because of how well he scaled with items. Right now, he's gameplay is focused only on Q, which deals tons of damage from beginning of the game because of it's total AD scaling. Which brings up question: why Riot made decision of adding AD scaling on champ that is supposed to be AP bruiser (that's what one of Rioters said, I think it was Meddler, but I'm not 100% sure)? This only creates confusion on what items should be built on Morde.

Which leads us to the key aspect in which that rework failed: itemization. Just think about it, how many stats Morde needs now to work properly. He needs AD, AP, health, attack speed, movement speed, resistances,.. It completely narrows the amount of viable item choices for Morde. He can't go for pure AD item. Or pure AP item, pure tank item, pure attack speed item etc. He needs to build items that will give him multiple stats at once. Are there a lot of such items? No. This makes itemization choice for Morde very, very narrow. Morde is now too reliant on too many different stats. Have you ever seen a champ that needs to rely on 6 different stats? Most of the champions rely only on 2, maybe 3 stats, eg. Ryze relies on AP and mana, Riven relies on AD and life steal, Vlad relies on AP, cooldowns and a bit of health, Kalista relies on attack speed, AD and a bit of life steal, the list goes on, and on, and on. And when you look at all those champs, they have huge variety of items that not only combine 2 or even 3 of those stats they need, but also gives them some kind of cool extras in form of passive and active effects. This is not the case for Mordekaiser, who needs to opt for such items as Trinity force, giving him a crap ton of different stats, but in small amounts.

warsaberso3 votes

I agree. The recommended items tab is now such a huge mess. Doran shield, ninja tabi and phage are now "necessary" just so he doesn't get kited to death against a usual bot lane comp. My eyes hurt when seeing that mashup of ad and ap items.

Mortekaiser6 votes

the problem with new morde is he is now a far more toxic and binary champion than he ever was before.

when builds normalize and people stop trying to build him tanky and instead build him AP burst like he was before, people will soon come to learn that he is far far more toxic and shitty to play against when losing, and a joke to play against when winning.

I played Morde mid (since FUCK that botlane Morde garbage) post-rework and the only thing I liked is the new shield (much easier to soak up harass when it has a minimum decay level). I couldn't even work out how to build him- seriously, he has TRIFORCE as one of his recommended items. The rework is a mess and should never have gone ahead- but we all told Riot that in advance and, as always, they didn't give a shit because of course THEY always know best don't they?

Incidentally, Morde mid did pretty good, even though I was up against LeBlanc, but the game was a loss because botlane were a duo of kamikaze idiots, toplane Yasuo started feeding and never actually stopped until he ragequit, and jungler never ganked. So it admittedly wasn't the best test of his capabilities. Mind you, getting a dragon and using it to tear down mid turret was fun.

I liked Morde better as a immobile bully in a solo lane. Once he got spell vamp he was a force to be reckoned with, gated by the weakness of his level 1 ult.

They could have just improved the playability of his Q/W/E and left the rest of his kit alone.

RISE Shlack1235 votes

Yeah I've played the new Morde in normals with friends (who in their right mind would do this in ranked????) and it was clunky, at best. Dragon isn't the smartest pet, playing in a duo-lane against one or two ranged champions mean you get punished for going in to farm, and his kit is much less reliable. Morde doesn't get going until mid game, but if you get stomped in lane, you probably won't ever get going. And if you do get a lead in lane, you're going to become unstoppable due to the ability to gain nearly solo-lane experience in a duo-lane, meaning you're always going to be ahead of the enemy bot lane.

Riot didn't listen when people protested this change. They got it in their head that this was going to be a great idea, and they clearly don't understand that its current iteration is terrible. They can't buff Morde without him becoming overpowered, but they can't nerf Morde because he'll be downright useless.

Mordekaiser: "STAND ON ME"

Sona: Es away

Mordekaiser: Flurry of Pings then death because he ranked his W first

SettDownShutUp1 votes

The reason I dislike the W is because it relies on another champion knowing how Mordekaiser's skills work. They need to know the skill doesn't work unless the rings are connected, they need to know that it heals if there's minions within their ring, they need to know it deals double damage if the rings overlap on the same target, they need to know I can pop it early to deal extra damage on a fleeing target, They need to know that I need them in range to cast my W on them so that I can get a movespeed boost to catch up, they need to know I can save them if they run toward ME by giving THEM a movespeed boost.

This is WAY too much info that a player besides the one playing mordekaiser needs to know, none of which is immediately apparent to the point that a game can be start and finished, and unless I give them a course on Post-Patch Mordekaiser 101 through chat they will leave this game thinking he and the player is crap.

I hate Morde's W for a lot of reasons, and complexity is one of the main ones. Harvesters of Sorrow is such a strange, esoteric ability that is absolutely impossible to explain to anyone quickly. His old W was kinda weak, but at least it was simple. This new one is a monstrosity.

Morde is the first of the soul stealing line up, why should he be the one out of the game? Wat bro?

Your description of Morde is so imo shallow I don't even know where to begin on your supposed "weird metal guy".

Let's break down who Morde really is shall we.

  • He is a wraith who is hinted to have once been either a general or a King of the Shadow Isles, centuries or perhaps millennium ago.
  • It's also hinted that Mordekaiser's armour is actually his own prison. A chain either he put on himself or from another individual to protect not Mordekaiser but the other he comes across. As what's underneath is way deadlier than what he appears to be.
  • He has a strong sense of hatred and is affiliated to pains, suffering and ofc, fear. As such his weapon of choice is a gigantic mace and controls metal shards for his own amusement.
  • It's also suggested that for an unknown reason, Mordekaiser seems to use attacking and cursing others partially as a way to harm himself, as he is unable to do so normally due to his unremovable armour (or the status of being a ghost) but he is capable of reducing his own life force through casting his spells. However whether he does it for masochistic desires or simply wishes for an end of his existence is unknown, it may very well be both at the same time.
  • He doesn't seem to be sane as a result of his incredibly long term mental torture. He changes his persona very frequently, sometimes as a strong willed king and for the most part, a lost soul who seeks only destruction.
  • He obtains souls to form an army/followers, possibly a remnant of his psychic from when he was still alive as a king/general. Some are recruited against their wishes, some welcome it. And he does seem to ignore normal civilians and children while choosing only those with power and abilities or other special conditions that he may find intrigued by, which makes him also stalk the slums to "save" those who are incurably sick and add them into his ranks.

Still a boring piece of metal to you?

I was an Olaf main followed closely by Mord. This isnt a pissing contest to see what "mains" got ruined harder. The fact that the list is growing of champs that got destroyed is the issue. Once people get around 100 games played with this guy in bot lane I feel like he will become extremely powerful in the right hands.

Helmight1 votes

Never said that Morde was not powerful - go reread the title of the thread. I'm happy that he's winning more than before, but I hate how he feels to play now and I loathe his builds.

Silents4292 votes

The old Mordekaiser had an identity, even if it was at odds with his appearance and was generally anti-fun. But the new Morde - even if it's regarded as more healthy for the game as a whole - is objectively worse.

Funny because Riot didn't understand his identity and when Meddler asked some people in the comments no one gave the same answer it seemed. In all the "I'm a Mordekaiser main, and I hate change" threads everytime the main tried describing Mordekaiser it differed from other threads, and this is the problem, he didn't have an identity he had multiple identities and Riot simply had to choose one.

It doesn't matter what direction they take with this rework they were going to make people mad no matter what, and you simply can't please everyone, I have seen more positive things about him since he got released, and a assload of negatives things before people even played him.

Does he still have a few kinks? Of course, and Riot knows this and has potential tweaks and fixes ready for whatever he may need.

The end results is a champion that feels much more unique to play and can be beneficial for the game in the long run to make bot lane a more interesting lane to be a part of, maybe it would have been better to make a new champion for this goal, but working around limitations like a rework can actually bring out some more creativity, and it has.

The Ecdysiast2 votes

Downvoting. Not because it's untrue, but because you're not going far enough with it.

Yeah, they've ruined his identity past the point where Mord mains would even touch him gently on the cheek as opposed to the sensual love-making they used to do. But making him a tank (even though that's how he looks) without any CC or movement is still a big problem.

If they are going to do that, it needs to be a complete rework. Into a new champion entirely like they did to Sion.

Helmight1 votes

Note that I don't WANT Morde to be a solid tank like Sion or Maokai are. I always saw Morde as a juggernaut - he's going to wade into a fight, laughing at your damage because of his passive shield, then lay down some serious hurt. So AP Bruiser would be a fine place for Morde to exist. Tanky, low CC, and high damage fit him perfectly.

And Old Morde totally works with that mold. His W gives tankiness and a bit of "get into the fray"-ness, plus damage. Q could have a slow added to its primary target, or could have increasing slows added with the second and third hits if we go with Riot's reworked version. E is a good way for Morde to stay alive in fights if he can hit most of the enemy team with it. R gives him a reason to wade into fights.

So a full rework is probably unnecessary. Minor touchups, like they did with MF, could have turned Morde from a melee AP burst mage into a melee AP juggernaut.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Minor touchups ruined any chance MF had of being viable. o.O

Helmight1 votes

MF's got her own problems, most of which I feel are tied to her scalings and the width of her ultimate. I feel as though she also doesn't have much of an identity besides "find a safe place to ult from", unlike champions like Corki or Lucian. So she needs a fair amount of work to be done - certainly the changes that were recently made to her didn't go far enough to improving her viability.

That being said, I think that Morde would have been relatively easy to change from an AP burst mage into an AP bruiser - it would have been a small rework similar to the MF one, and not quite a Sion-level project. That was the point I was making. Obviously, numbers take longer to figure out than actual kits changes :P

People will call me crazy and I know it's not terribly related but. Rageblade actually sort of works on somebody now. -You just build AP and AD into it which are both good -It gives you enough attack speed to make your Q more efficient (Without having to waste gold on actual attack speed items) -Morde can easily maintain the 8 stacks and Fury by casting his E as he walks around with no real drawback -Seeing as he can maintain Fury he essentially has LifeSteal+SpellVamp and attack speed out of it without having to build anything awkward on him

I'm not saying it's like his new core item or that it's suddenly super good on him. But I'm just surprised because this is the first time I've ever looked at Rageblade and was like "Yeah that actually sounds viable"

Also I think Rushing trinity is a bit of a gold waste. I've found Phage, then Rylais to be more consistent throughout your build path (And Rylais power spike is sooner)

Hence the reason for me creating this thread. I don't expect that I can change their mind, but I at least want a conversation about Mordekaiser and the fan expectations versus Riot's vision. Compromise isn't CertainlyT's strong point, but who knows?

I really doubt that he's gonna listen to anybody, in all these years he always does whatever he wants.

morde is so unhealthy now. He use to be a lane bully that would be punished if over extended and rewarded if played smart because of his late game damage. Now i think he is more toxic than yorick. He either A) dies a lot and is completely useless at all points of the game or B) Gets fed and solo's baron at 20 minutes because of a dragon buff and then takes that advantage and eats your team alive. He is in a terrible state right now riot idk what the hell you were thinking with this one.
