In a bush it does 16% of the champions Maximum Health damage plus 300 base damage PLUS 4% Maximum Health For every 100AP Magic damage.

And this is on a 6 second cooldown.

that is at max rank ... and that is if he get AP which most build him full tank ...

and its conditional to you walking into a bush and getting hit by one.. its not like it does that damage just for casting it and he can target you with it

Most people are still in old Maokai mode. A lot of people are experiementing with split builds where they get something like Ludens so they can get another 4%. Then that shit is on a 6 second cooldown and doesnt really cost much mana. you just throw them in bushes along your way and when someone walks near them it will take off around 1/2 their hp

he dont have good ap scalings so putting that much gold into an item that dont provide tank stats or mana isnt good for him

well they lowered hp on tank items and compensated it with resistances so it wouldn't be a great idea to go ap mao

Full AP mao sup is actually pretty effective in the most cheesy way possible.

Ludens+TLD+3ish saplings in a bush can 100-0 poor unsuspecting people with no mr.

edit: Also, check out my normals match history on op.gg, I've been having plenty of fun with it. Don't think it's ranked strong, but it's still fun.

that is because no one knows how to punish him for being full ap... and people arent use to seeing him in bot lane...

and i have played maokai for 3 seasons... played him in every role but ADC cuz just cant quite figure that out yet... and i have played him ad maokai before too

item 3025 item 3042 item 3053 is fun or if you like item 3078

i also have played him full ap... i play him full tank, ap bruiser every which way you can imagine

it's conditional but he can make it happen quite simply by q'ing you into the closest brush that he can e into and w you to where you stay long enough for it to proc

and how easy is it not to play near bushes? just as u dont play against walls vs vayne's condem or poppy and walls etc

u dont bunch and fight vs a MF when she has ult cuz its aoe damage, u dont bunch vs ori cuz of her ult. ..

but no one is wanting their damage nerfed

we are talking about a tank with conditions applied to his damage amplification

With that train of thought, 16% of a person's max health on a low-ish CD when Maokai is building no AP seems like a lot of damage for a tank to be able to deal from a safe distance (and sometimes when he's not present at all). It's also stackable to some degree.

There's plenty of bushes that are extremely likely that someone is going to run through or near it. Shutting down tri-brush is pretty valuable.
