A few months ago the community was saying that thornmail needed to be better, and many people were suggesting it apply grievous wounds, now that that's happening many people are saying it's bad, even though it will fix draven DD problem, fiora early game problem and a few others including adc lifesteal
dont forget, you need to AUTO the person with bramble to have grievous wounds apply
Shuyin1783 votesPeople are saying that because of how they changed the damage reflect on it. Original : UNIQUE: Reflects 15% of the physical damage taken (+ 25% bonus armor) from basic attacks and on-hit effects back to its source as magic damage (Calculated before any resistances or reductions are taken into account).
PBE : Unique Passive - Thorns: Upon being hit by a basic attack, reflects magic damage equal to 10% of your bonus armor plus 25, inflicting Grievous Wounds on the attacker for 1 second.
So it no longer deals damaged based on the attacker, just base damage + less of your armor%.
Dehitay2 votesWait, where was this change mentioned? This is my first time hearing about it. And if it's true, it's far past time that tanks finally got a grevious wounds item. Thornmail was always the common sense item to put it on. Though the nerf to the damage thornmail does might end up making the item worthless.
Mister Modesty1 votesI always thought they should bring the "thorns" effect to more items by giving Chain Vest damage redirection. Death's Dance completely counters Thornmail by itself. Then you have items like Black Cleaver which obliterate Thornmail, and Armor Penetration items on top of that. Not to mention Lord Dom's which deals extra damage based on the difference in max health- which is always in favor against Thornmail considering low-Health champs aren't buying the Thornmail. Then consider the many items with Lifesteal. The counter-options to Thornmail are relentless. My theory is that if players can be allowed to stack over 50% Lifesteal, then we should also have the option of stacking up damage redirection. But Thornmail is a Unique. Of course, I main Rammus so I get frustrated by Draven's melting me at full build..
hhaavviikk1 votesisn't that because it nerfs unintended champs? lifesteal is too strong on fiora and ADC's and by giving thornmail GW they effectively nerfed lifesteal for EVERYONE it's a case of the strong get a bit weaker and the weak get even weaker when facing thornmail

alternatively they could rebalance all of the champions and items, however
this is the easy route give grievous wounds to thornmail
then if needed buff some of the champs who where already struggling
