Dear Fellow Summoners,

I was told NEVER to take: MAGICAL FOOTWEAR / OVERGROWTH / CONDITIONING runes.

Because... because they're terrible.

  1. Supposedly Overgrowth bonus is extremely small even in late game.

  2. Magical footwear has been nerfed into the ground, and is the least valuable rune in that branch

  3. Conditioning is also the least valuable rune in its branch and does nothing for lane phase, which is so important.

I wanted to check with you all to see if I was correct!!

Sincerely,

B.

It isn't really possible to give you an accurate answer because there is no specific circumstance available to consider.

The questions you should be asking yourself are:

What is my team composition like?

What role am i playing?

What is the enemy team's composition like?

What champion am i playing?

Those questions will often lead you to decide which runes are best suited for the situation. It isn't really easy to say what runes in general are good or bad, without an application to a champion in a situation. An example of this would be Lethal Tempo is not good on Annie, however it is great on Kayle.

Further more, i do not think the runes have been out long enough for people to have discovered and fully explored all the of the different avenues and combinations of runes/champions yet, so my advice to you is trial and error.

It all depends. Like conditioning on Galio is great because you do build resistances and you can take more for free with the rune.

And I take magical footwear on a lot of champs because people underestimate the extra movement speed all the time.

I always take Magical Footwear when I can. Free boots? That's 300g saved, my man. And since you shouldn't be rushing boots first, it discourages you from doing so, perpetually putting you 300g ahead of your opponent.

  1. What you heard about Overgrowth is likely true. Even with 200 minions and 4000 health, you get only 200 hp. Needless to say it's useless for most of the game and most builds. You get just as much sustain early levels from the heal increase off of Revitalize if you get a Doran's blade or Shield. If the opponents have a lot off cc (besides displacements and knockups), then Unflinching is good.

  2. Magical Footwear saves 300g from the boot cost alone, with the additional 120g from the +10 movement speed. So a total of 420g with a bonus 10 movespeed. Stopwatch's active can be useful, but unless you're planning to buy an item it builds into, you're not getting any gold value out of it. If you do, since it costs 350g more to upgrade, you're only saving 250g with no additional effect. Of that tier, Hextech Flashtraption is the one that's completely useless. If you have time to cast it, you had time to walk as every champion including unmounted Kled.

It seems like you misheard your friend. It's stopwatch that was nerfed and is low in value, not footwear. Footwear hasn't been nerfed at all.

  1. Conditioning is fine as a tank who has to play safe anyway. Chrysalis is the best against early poking, while Second Wind is decent both early and late. But if you're a champion who's forced to play safe to begin with and builds tank mid game, you don't need the addition of chrysalis or Second Wind. You won't be playing any more aggressively with them.

Hope this helps.

  1. Supposedly Overgrowth bonus is extremely small even in late game.

Still benefits a tad for users with HP scalings like Shen, Ornn and Braum.

  1. Magical footwear has been nerfed into the ground, and is the least valuable rune in that branch

"Nerfed into the ground" is just simply wrong when you can literally get free 300 gold boots with an additional 10+ movement speed. And I'm surprised that you literally called this rune worse than Hextech Flash.

  1. Conditioning is also the least valuable rune in its branch and does nothing for lane phase, which is so important.

Dark Harvest is also terrible to use in lane, you never see someone taking Hail of Blades in laning phase, and mana-related runes like Manaflow Bands on manaless champions. Additionally, conditioning is a great Rune for tank junglers like Sejuani.

Thank you guys.

By the way, Hextech Flash gets its uses quite a bit. You can watch Aphromoo on Twitch; he will show you how very useful it is, despite the windup and short distance.
