Skarner needs some love
It's been almost 2½ years now since Skarner was part of the juggernaut patch, and he's still in the same shitty spot since then. I just don't get why it has continued to be like this, he's in concept a pretty neat champion but is overshadowed by his many many weaknesses and design flaws.
First of all; his passive is the most obnoxious thing in existance to deal with. While you're off your zones you're a worm, but when you're on them you're basically a super saiyan. I get that it's meant to make Skarner an objective controller, but even then people just stay out of his zones or ignore it, because Skarner doesn't have any relevant damage at all until he gets at least 2 damage items.
His Q has NO base damage at all, it only has an AD+AP scaling (33%/36%/39%/42%/45% AD + 30% AP), and I don't think there's a single ability in League that is like this. You could argue that it's because it's spamable, but other spamable abilities can way more damage than this and those are usually ranged attacks too. His E doesn't have strong damage either (40-140 + 20% AP).
So what does that leave us with? Once
actually gets past the early game, he's a great champion that deals a lot of damage, with strong engage and heavy CC, but before that he has to endure being one of the weakest champions in the jungle. Anyone can outduel Skarner early game, some can even do it while he's on his super saiyan zones, and most champions also tend to clear fast than he does (again, no base damage on Q). If you compare Skarner to any of the other juggernauts, they can deal WAY more damage than Skarner and even tank more than he.
(pre-minirework)). Skarner has a pretty poor winrate right now, and whether you like his passive or not, I think we can both agree on that he's pumped with insane stats while on the zones but off the zones he loses to almost anyone due to 0 base damage on Q and a mere 40 damage on his E.
Not to mention all his weird AP scalings, which was decent back when some items were meant to hybrid champions (
(old->)
).
